Perry,Sharp mark revival
of their A&M Corps unit
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Gov. Rick Perry
and his fellow Texas A&M classmate and now A&M
System Chancellor John Sharp are getting together in
College Station for ceremonies marking the reactivation
of their old Corps of Cadets squadron.
Squadron 6 is one of two Aggie Corps squadrons offi-
cially coming back to life Friday. It was disbanded in
1992 as Corps membership slipped. But A&M officials
say membership in the recent fall semester was 2,303
students —the highest in 15 years. So for the second
straight year, two former squadrons are being reacti-
vated.
Perry and Sharp were among 58 members of Squadron
6 to arrive as Aggie freshmen in 1968. They were among
13 still there as seniors in 1972 when Perry graduated as
Aggie yell leader and Sharp was student body president.
Boot camp using stun
guns accused of assault
ABILENE, Texas (AP) —A West Texas boot camp
that disciplines children with stun guns and handcuffs
is being investigated on assault allegations.
Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge is to discuss the
investigation Friday afternoon. Earlier this week he said
a local boot camp allegedly assaulted children as young
as 4 years old, but no one had been charged.
Paul Huntington, chief executive of Reality Invasion
Boot Camp, denies the allegations. He says drill ser-
geants used a stun gun on a teenage girl who assaulted
them during a home visit recently. He says the mother
had hired them for her three children, who were ordered
to complete chores.
Huntington says parents must sign waivers allowing
the staff to use handcuffs and stun guns. He says those
methods are used only under extreme circumstances.

Planned Parenthood
asks judge to block law
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Planned
Parenthood is asking a judge to stop
Texas from banning the group from
providing state-funded health servic-
es to poor women.
This is the group’s latest attempt to
stop the so-called affiliate rule that
bans groups that support abortion
rights from participating in any state
health program.
Planned Parenthood lost a bid
for a temporary restraining order
on Dec. 31. The state Health and
Human Services Commission cut off
funding to clinics that provide birth
control and health exams the next
day. Lawyers will ask Travis County
District Judge Steve Yelenosky for
a temporary injunction that would
allow Planned Parenthood to contin-
uetreating 48,000 women eligiblefor
benefits under the Women’s Health
Program.
State I aw for bids payments for abor-
tions. The program only helps poor
women who are not pregnant.
