i In the several oil test wells now drill-
ing here.
Some fifteen years ago, the Texis
& Pacific Rollway Compa’ny drilled a
well ln search of water for their en-
gine-, near Annona, east of Clarks
vftle. Several oil showines and much
gas were encountered in the drilling
of this well, which was ordered aban-
doned because of the«e showings, as
at that time water was much more
desired than oil or gas.
After this well was abandoned, and
part.of the casing pulled, the gas con-
tinued to escape from the well with
considerable pressure, altho coming
thru several hundred feet of mud and
water could be lighted, and would
burn for many dgys.
At about the same tlnje, the City of
Clarksville drilled a well on the pub-
lic Square, where the Confederate
Monument now stands. The city
fathers were also ln search of water,
with which to supply the needs of
the city. However, as wag the case
with the Texas & Pacific in their well,
they got nothing but oil showings,
gas and salt-water.
Those fam'llar with the history of
the discovery of oil ln Texas, and the
subsequent development that fol-
lowed. will remember the case of the
