OF TEXAS
Texas is a great state and by tins
is not meant greatness in extent of
territory although in that one par-
ticular the Lone Star can give all
the other fortytwo cards and spades
and win in the measurement Sho
is the biggest in the whole sisterhood
in area 265780 square miles Ttxns
is larger than the kingdom of Italy
the kingdom of Spain or the republic
of France she has more territory than
the German Empire has two Japans
could be set down within her borders
without uncomfortably crowdig elilm
one of them and five Englands loiud
be spread out here with some room
left for a Switzerland or two or scoe
or more of Monacos The population
of Texas is 3000000 while the popula-
tion of the countries or principalities
just cited ranges from 5000 to GOUOC
000 and more There is ample room
in Texas for 8000000 farms of two
acres each without destroying an acre
of her superb forests and the farm
already under cultivation and yielding
profit can be counted in myriads The
Lone Star State is also distinguished
by the fact that she has the largest
public school fund of any state in the
Union and the lowest tax rate airOii
those which levy direct sstate tuxes
There are 24G counties in the state
she sends sixteen represental iveu to
Congress has been great in great men
all along down the line from Sam
Houston to the Hon Joseph Weidon
Bailey and it is said by not a feA ob-
servant and discriminating Aroeiicaus
to possess more politics to the square
yard than any other three states com-
bined
Getting down to localities it may
truthfully be said that Galveston is
teaching the world a valuable lesson
a lesson in one of the best forms of
municipal government At the worlds
fair or Louisiana Purchase Exposition
at St Louis Smith county in Texas
was awarded the gold medal for the
greatest vahiety and the finest quality
of peaches and ever since then the
fruit and truck Industry of East Tex-
as has been menacing the prestige of
California The cotton crop of the
Btate ranged around and generally
above 4000000 bales annually it gen
erally constitutes about onethird of
entire crop of the United Stntes

WOMAN SUFFRAGE AND THE FAM
New York Evening Post Eyery one
knows the many different ways in
which giving the ballot to women is
bound to break up the home But no
one has taken the pains to point out
how womans entrance into politics
might strengthen the home by giving
husband and wife something to talk
about We do not believe that families
will break up because father votes the
republican ticket whereas mother nab
faith in Bryan On the contrary the
chances are that father will stay at
home nights and argue the matter It
is not undesirable that in every home
in this broad land there shall be an
appreciable measure of divergent opin-
ion It would supply the minimum
of irritant that is essential to the pre-
servation of life For every divorce
we have because of incompatibility of
temper there are probably a dozen
cases of divorce due to the absence
of all temper When husband and wife
have nothing to say to each other the
devil becomes the interlocutor Dread
ful are the silences that fall upon the
supper table when the first few years
have exhausted the subject of children
kitchen and shop Dreadful are the
empty evenings that end by driving
the husband to the club or saloon and
the wife into tears and neurosis Af-
ter a stretch of married life what is
there left to talk about Books might
serve as a topic if our men had time
to read them Newspapers might
help if women ever ventured into the
sporting page and the men into the
household hints Neighbors relatives
rices the plumbing clothes the kitch-
en range these serve only for a time
Then comes monotony then comes
torpor then comets the home that
stays unbroken only because it is
frozen hard Giving women a vote
might give renewed life to the family
by creating an inexhaustible source
of domestic debate A house sufllciont
ly divided against itself would be a
house from which all Interest In life
has not departed
