HABBFS REPORT
To the President and Members of
Cong Adath Yeslmrun in fleet-
ing Assembled
Gentlemen As the term of min-
istry for whiclL I have been elected
by you is to expire in about throe
months it is proper that I present
to you a report of my activities till
now Of course wc must always
keep in mind the distinction between
the oldstyle Uau and the modern
minister The former kept himself
aloof from all secular things and
devoted himself entirely to Torah
the modern minister on the other
hand cnteis into almost every rela-
tion in life with his charge ho is
their friend their companion and ad
viber he takes interest in all things
that concern them and in ever way
takes part in life enjoyment and
recreations
f Those of Adah Yeslmrun who first
urged my election as your rabbi
knew me altogether as a modern min-
ister thoughthey hadconfidence in
me that I might join to this office
also some part of the olden Ran
How these expectations were realized
is not for me to say In that line I
have striven to some extent and have
accordingly done the following
1st The regulation of the meat
question It is through my instru-
mentality and influence that the
business of the biitcher has been re-
moved from the o ffice of the Sho
chet2nd
2nd The introduction of a Min
cha service on Sabbath the eatly
Friday evening service the decisions
of questions of ritualistic form and
the maintenance of the authority
vested iiv the office
Howeverit itf asthc Modern Min-
ister that I have devoted time
thought and energy to my work and
that I have been successful in
this line I may without fear of seem-
ing selfcongratulation assert This
influence is shown

who attended the oral examination at
the close of the last bession can tes-
tify to the fact that our children are
well taught and becoming well
veiscd in our hisloiy and in the
Various forms and ceremonies of our
religionb
Second 1 am trying to inblil in
our children the habit of prayer and
of attendance at synagogue We
teach them the calendar daily pray
CIS
and hold special services for
them so that they get into the hab-
it of coming to school on Sabbaths
Third We inculcate in the hearts
of the children loe for Judaism
and pride in its achievements we
teach them the same religion and
the same practices which our i ath
eis taught us and the fact that these
children love their Sunday School
and attend with pleasure the Sab-
bath services gives us hope that they
will continue in the right path
1J As to Our Youth The work
is manifold Primarily in the syna-
gogue The institution af late Fri-
day evening services has brought to
our synagogue some who seldom or
never attended This year by their
special choice I am delivering a
couisc of lectures on the dogmas ot
Judaism which seem to interest as
well as instruct the heareis They
listen and after service oiten ply me
with questions as to the various
forms of our beliefs In this way
they come to know not only that
tiey are Yekudim but also they
know Judaism
Tlien there is thework in the Lit-
erary Society Here 1 devote one
evening each week in teaching lie
brow the Bible and Jewish History
This work has never been so thor-
oughly attempted in our congrega-
tion and it tends to bring our young
men and young women into a clear-
er understanding of matters Jewish
