have been twentyfive Jews in
Congress and forty in the Brit-
ish Parliament that the task of
getting back Palestine from the
Turks would be a comparatively
small matter It would be a trifle
jn comparison with the Panama
Canal
Look at the facts in the case
Palestine is a tiny scrap of a
country It would take ten Pal
estines to make one Arizona
Roughly speaking it is only 193
miles long and 75 miles wide It
has nlo good harbors no gold
mines no great natural re-
sources It is incredible to think
that a little proposition like the
purchase of Palestine could not
be handled by the great Jewish
bankers who control so largely
the financial destinies of the civ-
ilized world
In its present desolate and
neglected condition a check for
five million dollars would be a
high price to pay for Palestin
ian independence To buy it bit
by bit from its present owners
would not likely require more
than ten times this amount and
what is fifty millions to the piled
up billions of the Jews
When the Jews lost their
country two thousand years ago
they were a small weak money
less nation in the midst of armies
of barbarians but today there
are man for man more Jews in
the world than Turks They are
scientists judges artists engin-
eers Five times a Jew has been
Lord Mayor of London and the
present Mayor of Rome is a mem-
ber of the tribe of Nathan In
certain districts of Russia half
of the commerce and ninetenths
of the newspapers lare in the
hands of the Jews In this coun
thy they control the trade in
clothing smelting jewelry and
cigars besides owning most of
our department stores and dom-
inating grand opera and the
drama In fifty countries the
Jews have made good They are
now a strong people and the
dream of the strong comes true
The Jews will never be satis-
fied with anything less than ab-
solute independence however
v meekly they talk of charters
and concessions In the new
CapitoJ that shall be built at Je-
rusalem they want no fezzed
i Pasha and above the Capitol

crescent but the Jewish flag
white with blue stripes and the
shield of David in the center
The Jews are in every respect
a nation That is the main fact
that underlies their history and
their beliefs They have a fla
and a language and a religion
and a country everything but
the titledeed to their country
They had a written history and
an empire two thousand years
before the Turks appeared upon
the scene at all They were a
fully civilized race before either
Ainerica or Europe was on the
map
When Joseph Chamberlain
was Prime Minister of Great
Britain several years ago he of-
fered the Jews a huge slice of
Africa so that they could have
a country of their own They
refused it as might have been
expected As well might he have
gone to a bereaved mother and
offered to console her with an-
other child It matters nothing
to the Jew that Palestine is now
no more than the shabby back-
yard of a Mahometan Empire
They love it none the less per-
haps because it has become a
semidesolation It is Home
It is quite as easy to detach
Palestine from Turkey as we
found it was to detach Alaska
from Russia or the Philippines
from Spain Turkey needs
money She is five hundred mil-
lions in debt
There are many reasons why
the little land of Palestine may
have a great future as well as-
a great past It is a halfway
house between Europe Asia and
Africa It is close to Egyptian
cotton and the cheap foods of
Asia Minor And it lies just
around the corner from the busy
Suez Canal All the ships that
link the East and West together
transfer to Palestine
The Palestine of today is all
astir with new life It is the
point where the West and the
East unite Jericho is still a
melancholy heap of ruins Cana
of Galilee is still a tiny hamlet
and Bethlehem tworda which
the thoughts of all Christendom
turn at this Christmas time is no
more than a village of five
hundred stone houses fastened
like eagles nests along the sides
