Letters to the Editor
In reply to Robert Doss —
dear ole dad we all love you
even when you do us a great
disfavor such as your letter of
recent date in Herald.
Denison pulled Sherman out
of a tragic circumstance of vot-
ing two to one against the jun-
ior college—I wish we could do
the same for the mistake Deni-
son is about to make now on
the new Highway 75 which must
be a limited access highway.
First — Sherman’s tax rate,
because of equitable reevalua-
tion we have needed for 25 years
will now be lowered. We are
building ten million new tax-
able property this year which
will increase school and city in-
come by $80M. Both Denison
and Sherman, if they have any
sense, can have approximately
5250M year- each from 1% sales
tax based on present sales now
to qplieve strain on real estate
tax.
In my 13 years in Grayson
County I have seen raw real
estate, for instance along 75
North, increase 500% to 1000%.
We need to buy right of way
now—-because it will cost 300%
or more later. The new 75 will
not be built for five years at
least—in meantime houses will
be built on proposed right of
way. In Texas there is no way
to get an injunction against such
construction.
There are 20M cars a day on
old 75—this will hit 40M by 1972
and 90% of this traffic is local.
Old 75 will soon be Main street
—there is one Penny Store with
140,000 square feet going out
there next year.
The service stations and mo-
tel owners don’t have to worry
if we grow according to our po-
tential. To reduce and kill off
progress just vote against need-
ed public facilities. Let new in-
dustry go to Paris in Lamar
County which voted twelve to
one for right of way bonds for
the new Tulsa to Houston ex-
pressway—that’s the “by pass”
Grayson County best be con-
cerned about; or new industry
can go to Gainesville— where
bank’s say that downtown is
100% better since getting rid
of through traffic.
Everyone, including yours tru-
ly, is frustrated by national and
world events, such as Vietnam,
but let’s not vent our frustra-
tion in negativism against our
own county progress. This thing
represents needs for next dec-
ade—which can be the greatest
—if we plan it and work toge-
ther. Industry in Denison and
Sherman is jobs for other ar-
eas. Let's keep our kids in
Grayson County.
Old folks have always had to
sacrifice some for generations
coming behind—they understand
that their grandparents did for
them—and so it will always be.
Sincerely,
Charles A. Spears

Dear “Fastest Pen in the West”
In the Denison Herald Sunday,
you wrote that Sherman opposed
