OIL EXPLOSION
Occurs on Barge Four Lives Being
Lost and Same Number Injured
New York Dec 20 Four men lost
their lives and four others were se-
verely burned In a lire on the Standard
Oil companys barge No 91 which was
righted oft Long Branch N J Satur-
day night When the blazing vessel
was sighted It was Impossible to learn
anything regarding the fate of the
crew Tugs which were near at hand
gave all assistance possible and no ef-
fort was made to reach the barge by
the life saving crow at that point The
first news came hero Monday morn-
ing when a tugboat put Into Long Is
land City with fourBurvlvors on board
All theao men were seriously burned
and taken at once to a hospital There
was found one In a critical condition
It Is believed the other threo men will
survive their Injuries
Tho cause of the lire on the bargq
has not been explained None of the
survivors are In any condition to talk
but it Is learned there was an explo-
sion and burning oil thrown over tho
vessel The men were knocked un-
conscious by the concussion nnd tho
burning oil set fire to their clothing
The barge had on board 21000 barrels
or 1000000 gallons of oil

Counsel For Nan Patterson Decide to
Put Her on the Stand

Nan Patterson announced before the
opening of court Monday that arte a
conference they had decided to put
her on tho stand and through defend-
ants own testimony prove that she
did not kill and did not plan to kill
Caesar Young as has been the conten-
tion of Assistant District Attorney
Rand It was also said that in tho
event of counsel deciding to put her
In defense it was quite probable Miss
Patterson would be allowed to take
the stand and tell her own story of the
fatal ride with the bookmaker Miss
Patterson declared she was not only
willing but anxious to tell her story
to the Jury There Is much I can
tell the Jury they will learn from no
other source she Is quoted as saying
and when they hear what I have to
say every one of them will vote to set
me free Nan Patterson Is so confi
dent of acquittal she said she had
spent her last Sunday In the tombs
and added that she would be In her
fathers house at Washington before
another Sunday comes

charge of the investigations District
Attorney Hall and Assistant District
Attorney Henry decline to make any
statement regarding the probable acts
of the Jury but rumors are rife con
cerning Indictment of a man well
known in legal and political circles
throughout the country as well as a
number of others not so important In
the community
A rumor more persistent than oth
eis is that some o those who wero
convicted of conspiracy at the trial
which was concluded ten days ago
have been In communication with rep-
resentatives of the government with
the resuri that In consideration of
their placing in the hands of the gov-
ernment evidence that will lead to tho
Indictment of persons alleged to be
Instigators in the conspiracy some of
those already convicted will escape
with nominal sentences or perhaps
with only fines
