Onicn Growintr in Texas
II 15 Alexander of Jacksonville
Texas in the DalGat Mens gives
sornu usolul information for onion grow-
ers Wo extract Thu onion will grow
on almost all soils and will adapt Itself
to almost all natural surroundings and
conditions that Is tlio blackest tho
whitest and the rodest soils will yield
larco crops of onions if they aro mado
rich by largo applications of fertilizer
cither barnyard or commercial These
combined with thoiough tilago and fro
qucnt watering insuro in abundant
croi > eery year on almost any Texas
soil while with many other trulls and
vegetables It Is quito the contrary Tho
tomato for oxamplo ouo of tho most
popular of all vegetables Beoms to ruach
its climax in color flavor and carrying
quality in tho light sandy soil of EaBt
Texas The sanie with tho sweet pota-
to while tho Irish potato does equally
as well or better on tho heavier black
or soil and tho npplo arrives at its Vest
in tho northern part of the State and
tho peach has a natural homo in tho
central east part of tho State iu vChor
okeo Smith and other counties This
is true with many other fruits and veg-
etables Tlioy have their special loca
tion and soils upon which thoy reach
their greatest perfection and no kind of
fertilizing or tiling will bring them to
this outside of theeo special localities
Tho onion is one of tho oldest of vege
tables cultivated by man It has been
grown for thousands of years and in-
most all parts of tho world And con-
sidering tnis it Is surprising tho ignor-
ance that exist among most farmers
and many gardeners about its cultiva
tion harvesting marketing etc I have
received scores of letters of inquiry
from everywhere about seeds sots va-
rieties planting cultivation harvest-
ing marketing etc It is my intention
in this letter to give the information as
near as I can that has been sought by
nearly all of these parties
1 Get genuine Irenh seed nearly all
the reliable seedmen havo them of tho
white Bermuda variety Tho seed are
imported from the Teneriffe Island
near west coast of Africa and cost
about 3 per pound here It takqs about
two bushels per acre and in September
as soon as you can get them they
Bhould bo planted iu a thoroughly pre
pared bo d with a seed drill in rows 12
inches apart and thoroughly watered
when planted As soon nH up good
which is in 10 days they should be
watered and cultivated with double
wheel hoes every two weeks until about
Dec 1 transplanting time Then they
aro taken up and roots and tops cut off
about onehalf and put in beds just
like the seed bid 120 feet long and 12
feet wide 10 rows in each bed These
beds have a small border thrown up
around them so as to control the water
as ull watering is done the flooding way
Tho little plants are about tho sire of a
slate pencil when ready to transplant
aro put 4 inches apart in tho drill and
aro cultivated with double wheel hoes
every two weeks until about lOdays be-
fore digging They aro ripe when most
of tho tops havo dropped over We use
a manytined fork in digging that will
lift several onions at each moement of
the fork A plow or digger of any kind
is not practical at Laredo on account of
the hard baked soil They might be
used elsewhere iu the State These on-
ions aro let Btay in tho sunshine for 24
hours then hauled to tho ham where
roots and tops aro cut off with com-
mon sheep shears and packed iu nicely
mado slatted crates hulding about 47
pounds net and loaded in ventilated
stable cars about 400 crates to the car
Tho methods of marketing aro about as
many as tho men that grow them We
think wo havo been quito successful in
marketing on the consignment plan
Wo select as near as wo can tho best
most reliable old established commis-
sion houses in tho cities in the North
and East and get in touch with then
by correspondence sometime bofore the
crop is ready to move and lot them
know what wo have And while wo nre
shipping wo are posted by wire daily on
all tho markets and supply tho differ
ent markets according to prico and do
mand by diverting from St Louis ns
everything Is hilled to ourselves at St
Louis By this means gluts ato avoid-
ed to a large extent Many growere in
Southwest Texas prefer selling to a
broker at so much per hundred pounds
at railroad Btation in package to suit tho
brokor may wish Whilo this has prov-
en very saio and relieves tho grower of
all business of tho marketing problem
it has not paid him near as much for
his onions
Tlio next and last point I will consid-
er is the problem of overproduction
and consequent glutted markets It is
useless to say that it cannot be done
for in every lino of business wo hear
the try of ovorpoduelion some times
Hut onion growing In Texas is in its in-
fancy arid when we teo the vast quan-
tity of them imported from Bermuda
Islands Kgypt and Spain in April and
May every year It will ho quite a whilo
beforu we need fear overproduction for
we havo every advantage in Texas over
these foreegn countries for growing
onions
