bad was right there At the close of IW >
the capitalization of the Atchison stock and

dertaking the construction of a lino fiom
Kansas City Into Chicago The company
considered that it would never bo a really
gioat trunk lira until It had an Independ-

the Chicugu nnd St Louis inilroad nnd
oilier small links and before tho end of
the following year Its ambitions were real-
ized in tho Chicago Suita Fo nnd Cali-
fornia railroad which Is 4V miles long
To build this extritlon the Chicago Santa
lo and California company Issued 1507
000 5 per cent bonds which probably cov-
ered the cost Thev were guaranteed by
tho Atchl on the latter company receiv-
ing ithc stock free Besides this outlay
the Atchison through nn Independent
company paid out 31723 for new ter

Tho Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe sys
tcin of today with its 0341 miles making
It tho blggeit In the world and Us tb00V
00 capitalisation which Is tho greatest In
this country was one of many ordinary
railroads In tho United States no longer
ago than 1SS3 At the end of that year It
owned and operated I50C miles o road
It was In that year that It began to ex
pand on a large scale the first great ex-
tension being tho Atlantic and Paclllo
railroad which It cintractcd to build
jointly with the Bt Louis and San Fran-
cisco railroad for tho purposo of giving
both systems an outlet to the Paclllo
coast
The original Atohlacn and Topeka rail-
road was incorpoiated February 11 1S53
Tho Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe
which absorbed the smaller road nns or-
ganized In 1SC3 Tho line between Topeka
nnd Atchison was opened in December
1872 and the line from Topeka to Kansas
City was leased three years later In per-
petuity Thu New
Mexican division was
opened in 1SSI as far as Dcmlng where
the line connected with the Bouthern Pa
clllo railroad
The Atlantic and Faclflo had been
bought by the St Louis nnd San Fran-
cisco under foreclosure In 1876 and It gave
tlvp Atchison a liulf Interest In the At
lantic nnd Paclllo when tho agreement of
extension to the Pnclllc coast was made
In 1SS5 which was to bo nlong tho thlrty
flfth parallel First mortgage land grant
bonds not to exceed 23O00 a mile and
Income bonds to the amount of JI87uO 11
mile were authorized Second mortgage
bonds at J100O0 were authorized In case
they were needed Tho Atchison and St
Louis companies guaranteed twentylive
per cent of gross earnings derived from
Interchange of traffic with tho Atlantic
nnd Paclllo ronl to meet any deficiency
In interest on the first mortgage bonds
such advances to be treated ns loans pay-
able with Interest New 4 per cent bonds
Of tlii Atlantic road wero Issued Jnnuaiy
1 1SS7 principal nnd Interest guaranteed
by tho two construction companies
This seems to have been the beginning
of the Atchisons tribulations for It not
only bad to furnish most of the money for
building the Atlantic and Pnclllc exten-
sion which In Itself has proved n valua-
ble accession but it was dragged Into the
mire by Its relations with the St Louis
and San Francisco company and In later
years it had to absorb the latter system
In order to savc anything from the slough

The entire rommon and preferred stock
of tho St Louis and Ran Francisco with
a small exception was purchased by the
Atchison in May MM tho Atchison Is
