7 Hornets To Host Panthers Friday Night

Hornets Host
Second Game
Holland will host the
Normangee Panthers in a
non-district football contest
this Friday September 14
but the Horncst are not
planning a pleasant recep-
tion. This will be Normangcc's
first game of the year since
they were Idle last week
giving Holland a slight ad-
vantage In that department.
But Holland Coach Gary
Tyson expects Normangee to
be stronger this year than
last when Holland took a 21-
12 victory. The Panthers arc
picked for a fourth place
finish In District 11-B. Tyson
thinks Normangee will be
about a 7 point favorite going
into the contest.
Normangee returns 8 of-
fensive and G defensive
starters. The most slgificant
change will be in the back-
field where only starting
quarterback Joe Bussard will
return. The offensive line on
the other hand lost only one
player to graduation.
The Pantcrs arc not big
and should average about ICO
pounds on the front line
compared to about 163 for
Holland.
The Hornets arc all ex-
pected to be ready for the
contest with the exception of
junior tackle Randy
Doskocil who will see only
limited action because of a
leg Injury.
Against Lometa good
efforts were contributed by
senior tailback Kirk Good-
night junior end John Rabcl
who also saw limited action
in the backficld and fullback
Robert Wiley.
A Goodnight to Rabel pass
provided one TD and Wiley
got the other. All three
averaged over 4 yards per
carry in rushing yardage.
Defensively Jay Titlow
David Walker Bobby
Ferguson and Wiley were the
leaders. Titlow and Walker
arc defensive halfbacks
Ferguson plays rover and
Wiley is at linebacker.
Starting time for the
Holland-Normongcc contest
will be 7:30 p.m. at Hornet
Field in Holland.

Holland Hornets Fall To Lometa 29-12
By RONNIE I'KRSKY
Minor ailments and ex-
cessive turnovers cost the
Holland Hornets a win in
their first game of the season
Inst Firday night as they fell
to the Lometa Hornets 29-12
before a big home crowd at
Hornet Field.
Holland came on strong in
the first half as they scored
first and maintained a 12-6
halftime lead. Both of
Holland's scores were in the
second period of play. With
1:23 to go in that quarter
fullback Robert Wiley
punched over from the 3 yard
line capping a 68 yard 11
play drive. A pass for the
conversion was no good.
Then with 5:51 to go in the
second quarter tailback Kirk
Goodnight and end John
Rabel teamed up on a CO yard
pass ploy for another Holland
TD. Again the conversion
was no good.
Goodnight missed the
second half suffering from
asthma and the heat while
Rabcl missed most of the
second half with a muscle
Injury.
The loss of the two boys
was apparently enough to
call a halt to the Holland
offensive machinery and
then three fourth quarter
turnovers gave an additional
15 points to Lometa to ice the
game. In all Holland gave up
the ball 7 times on turnovers
4 on fumbles and 3 on pass
interceptions.
Coach Gary Tyson was
disappointed with events in
the second half of play but
felt his team did a good Job
overall.
Freshman quarterback
Jon Goodnight had some
problems with interceptions
and aggressive charges by
the defense but still com-
pleted 5 of 9 attempted passes
for CI yards not bad for his
first night of varsity football.
Goodnight alternated with
senior David Walker at the
QBspot.
Lometa received the
opcing kick off but tough
defensive work by Terry
Johnson Gary Doskocil and
Alan Bland among others
forced the visitors to punt
before they could achcivc a
first dowrr.
Tailback Kirk Goodnight
picked up about four yards
before a Jon Marc Goodnight
to John Rabcl pass netted
Holland 37 yards and a first
down on the Lometa 27.
Tailback Goodnight fullback
Wiley and halfback Jay
Titlow picked up yardage to
almost the five yard line
where the local Hornets were
faced with a fourth down
situation.
Holland went for the field
goal but the attempt was
wide and Lometa took over
on their own 20.
Again a tough Holland
defense kept Lometa from
moving forcing another
Lometa punt. This time
Holland got poscssion on the
visitors' 42 yard line.
With John Rabcl and
Robert Wiley providing much
of the yardage the local
Hornets put together another
drive which climaxed 37
seconds into the second
quarter as Wiley went over
the left side of the line for
three yards and the TD.
Job Marc Goodnight's pass
for two extra points fell in-
complete. After about a 12 yard
runback Lometa took

HOLLAND OPENING GAME Action was plentiful at Hornet Field last Friday as
Holland played its first football game in the 1979 season falling to Lometa 29-12. In this

forces.
