Last year it saved
the average TP&L customer
$55.00
The price of electricity supplied by Texas Power & Light has gone up in recent
years but lignite coal has kept the increase from being much greater.
In the 1 960's natural gas for many years the only fuel used to produce
electricity at TP&L generating plants began to rise drastically In price and
supplies becamo uncertain. TP&L and two affiliated companios began a
massive program to reduce their dependency on gas by building plants which
use lower-cost lignite as fuel.
Slnco 1 971 eight lignite-fueled generating units have boon placed in opera-
tion. In 1 978 about 47 por cent of TP&L's fuel requirements was supplied by
lignite. For tho average TP&L residential customer who used 1 2435 kilowatt-
hours of electricity in 1978 use of lignite to produce that electricity meant a
saving of $55.00.
