would never get married but it was sue!
Eleanaot business I couldn't find it in tm
art to "let the girls alone' altogether .
I paid her tuition fee and attended the class
in her company every night. About the
middle of the term several of the young
pwple ourselves included were talking in
the ball-room on ihc subject of matrimony
and I of course became interested ss well
as others. Od going home that evening I
told my companion that I had determined
to get married in the spring and asked her
advice in regard to making a selection for a
wife. She made no reply for a moment
and I told her if she didn't know anv bodv
better fitted for me I should like to hav.
her think the matter over and tell me by
the last school what she thought of marry-
ing me herself. I was joking all this time
you must understand and had no more
thought of marrying her than I had of marr-
ing Queen Vic. She promised to think of
it however and I returned to my boarding
house and gave the subject no further
thought until some weeks later ; and as luck
would have it on the last evening of the
school the subject was again brought up in
conversation just as we were preparing to

terent matters ani on different subjects
till we reached her residence. It was late
and I did not enter the hou.-c. though she
strongly urged me to do so. I bid her good
night and sras turning away when I hap-
pened to think of the promise she had made
me and I said :
"Helen you promised to let me know to-
night whether you would marry me this
spring. Have you made up your mind V
"Yes" said she "I have been thinking
about it but I guess I am too young. It
it wasn't for that I would have no objec-
tion." "Well good night then" said I. "I
didn't expect you would do it but I am
bound to marry some one and this spring
too.'
Before leaving her I engaged to call again
the following evening. That aight I slept
soundly and the next morning hod forgot-
ten all about my uight's adventures i'ur-
ing the day. I received an invitation to at-
tend a ball to be held that evening a few
miles out of the fit and I made ray ar-
rangements accordingly. Towards dusk I
rememb -red my agreement to see Helen
and i thought I would run over for a mo
meut and aftei wards have time to atteml
the ball.
Arrived it the hous.- I met the lady iu
the d;rway and 1 thought for an instant
that she was "rigged up" in an extra style
which I was at a loss to account tor though
I believe I ooncluded that she had compa.iy
I was therefore ii hopes that I should uot
be .letained long. Helen welcomed me inu-
tile p irl-ir with a sweet smile and too her
place boside me on the sofa. I was expect-
ing every moment to ee some stranger en
ter the roon and I had not yet becotu-
satiKtied that we were alone wheu she
said
"Henry I've made up my mind to have
you ;
Had a thunder-clap struck me I could
not have been more .surprised and after an
instant of hesitation I stammered out
"What did you say ?"
"I have concluded to msrry you."
"0-oh you have ! Well I suppose it L-
all rijlu when shall that event take
place f"
"I thought if it would suit you that
you might drive round next Sunday and
we wiii go to motLcr's at Dearboard aud
be married there.
"Well" said I "III seeif Icau" and
as soon as p--iible I took my leave.
1 didu t go to the bail that night I for-
got about it. and sat over the stove till
morning thinking of what a scrape I got
myself into. I even forgot to keep the fire
goiug. and I almost froze in my seat.
When daylight began to peep in at the win-
dows I had made up my mind what I
should do. I would go over and tell Hele
that ws must be married immediately or
not at all and if she agreed to that I saw
no other way but to submit to my fate.
When I entered the gate leading up to
her house 1 heard her singing a lively song
and my conscience almost smote me for
deceiving the poor girl as I had ; but I
summoned up courage to ring the bell and
pulling up my collar and throwing my head
back l anxiously awaited an aaawer to my
o masons. She soon came to the door and
I was again shown into the parlor and she
took her place beside me on the sofa as be-
fore. "Helen" I commenced .
"Well whatr
"I I we must be married to-dav or
I I don't think I shall be able to be marri-
ed at all :'
It stock in my throat aa I said it for I
knew I was telling a whopper bat imag-
ine my surprise when the amid
"Well just as you please Henry. Yon
may drive yoor carriage around about twelve
o'clock and I will be ready."
I gave up ! Precisely at twelve I drew
up before her door with my carriage and j
betore night we were married.
Our friend added after finishing the
