ALLEN WRESTLING
New state deals Allen another top-5 result

KAUKAUNA, WIS. -
When informed his team
was one that many ob-
servers said would “make
some noise” in the
Kaukaima Cheesehead Invi-
tational Wrestling Tourna-
ment, Allen head coach
Jerry Best laughed and said,
‘"You must be mistaken.”
Maybe he just didn’t
want to give his team a big
head.
With a dominant per-
formance from junior Oliver
Pierce and six wrestlers in
the top five, the Eagles cul-
minated their trip to the
Badger State with a fifth-
place finish (445 points) in
the prestigious tourney.
“Our goal coming in was
to finish in the top five or

fifth with 445 points at the Kaukauna Cheesehead Invitational.
so,” Best said. “Our kids
wrestled very well. We had
a couple of letdowns, but
overall our performance is
pretty good for us.”
Allen’s success started
with Pierce.
The fourth-ranked 160-
pound wrestler in the coun-
try according to
ELECT

was a perfect 6-0 over the
weekend, recording two pins
and two technical falls on
his way to the 152 title. In
the championship match,
Pierce used his superior
speed and skill to record a 1-
0 overtime victory over Nick
Wenzek of Simley (Minn.).
“I had everything to lose,
or at least in my mind I did,”
an extremely tired Pierce
said after the match. “I was
being patient and eventu-
ally got my takedown in
overtime. It was ugly, but a
win is a win.”
Ugly could also be used
to describe the end of the fi-
nals at 145 pounds.
Sophomore Bo Nickal
was locked in an intense
contest with Simley’s Jake
Short, ranked seventh in the
nation at 145. With just sec-
onds left on the clock in the
second overtime, and Short
holding a 3-2 lead, Nickal
appeared to have scored a
one-point escape that would
have tied the match. The
referee did not see it that
way and Nickal had to settle
for second place.
“It was a controversial
call there at the end,” Best
said. “[Short] didn’t have a
lock or anything and Bo
turned and faced him, and
should have got the escape
point, and the ref didn’t call
it. That isn’t the way you
want to lose a match.
“If you are going to lose,
you want to do it without
the ref being involved.”
Allen had the full gamut
of finishes, from the contro-
versial to the exciting, and
none may have been more
exciting than the third-place
match at 126.
Senior Jarrod Trotter
used a well-timed takedown
as the clock expired in the
third period to earn a 4-3
victory over Eddie Greco of
Marmion Academy (111). It
was the second time in the
tournament Trotter had
beaten Greco, also earning a
5-1 decision in the quarterfi-
nals.
“I knew that I had to
keep moving, keep busy, be-
cause I could tell he was
tired and he wasn’t moving
on his feet,” Trotter said. “I
knew if I kept attacking, I
knew he was going to break.
I tried to shoot and hit a
peak out, but it didn’t work.
Then I hit a drag out and it
worked perfect because all
his weight was on the right
side.”
Trotter finished 7-1 in
the tournament, his only
loss coming at the hands of
event runner-up Eric Devos
of Waverly Shellrock (Iowa)
in the semifinals.
Juniors Matt Meyer and
Nick Cobb placed fourth at
170 and 195 pounds, respec-
tively.
“For Nick, this is his first
big tournament back from
an injury and he performed
pretty well,” Best said. “He
is not back in shape yet, but
he did a real good job.”
Allen junior Mason
Smout earned fifth place
with a 10-0 majority deci-
sion over CJ Miller of Ed-
wardsville (111.) and junior
Stone Drulman finished
eighth at 220 to round out
the Eagles’ seven placers
and contribute to the team’s
fifth-place finish.
“Bo Nickal came on real
strong and Oliver Pierce
was just dominating,” Best
said. “Overall, it was good
performance for us. This is a
very tough tourney.”
Allen is back in action in
Texas this weekend, but the
task doesn’t get significantly
easier as the team travels to
Vista Ridge for the 2012
Dual State Wrestling Tour-
nament.
The Eagles are three-
time defending champions
at the event.
