of the 6th insl has the'followiug in relation to tne
Texan prisoners recently liberated at Pero:e
- We ourselves knew months since that a'l or a
portion of these brave men .were. busily employed
in digging through their prisjn with the intention
of effecting th'eirtescape. Here is the article from
fhe;News:
Aporlion of "the prisoners were making arrange-
ments to effect their escape frdm the cas:le when
their release was made known to them.
It appears they Svere confined in four separate
rooms ivvehfy-six in "each apartment. 'Those in
one ofilie rooms had succeeded in rutting a hole
IhroUgVthe wall 'sufficient for a man to get out and
feplade the roclc so astisere was no possibiedhance
of detection'. This had beetfdoVe for several days
and they were daily secreting provisions tor their
flight when Gov 'Shannon visited the prison.
Their object was immediately made
known Tto the Minister who requested them
to-des'i'st until hi arrivaVat the capital as it was
his. intention' to makeari effort to have them libera-
ted. The result of his influence in the cause of
Tiumaniiy was made manifest by IheTr immediate
release wntcn no ooudi-nas preveniea the loss ot
several lives and many hardships and- difficulties
they would have encountered before they could have
efiected their escape from the country.
