Puree Metternich. -Extrast of a let-
ter to the N. Y. Journcl of Commerce:
4t Prince Metternich is admired by all is
said to be profoundly learned in all branches
is very industrious and seems to resemble
John Q. Adams in rrmny respects. He is
very rich having numerous domains: one
near this of 40 to 50000 acres of land containing-
a population of 12000 souls who
are his subjects and are as nearly his slaves
as iflhey had lived in feudal times. He has
another domain about a day's ride from this
with 15.000 souls as his tenants or ns they
are styled subjects. Also he is proprietor of
the far fami'd estate on the Rhine of Johan-
nisberg where the celebrated Hock wine is
produced from which he derives a large re-
venue annually; as the pure Johannisberg- is
onlv drank by crowned heads and the great
of the world whilst that obtained by less fa-
' vcred mortals is made n the neighborhood.
' Prince Il. has a library of 40000 volumes
a: his Palace near here where he spends
about a month every year not in amuse-
merits but in study. He has a fine mineralo-
peal cabinet and coin cabinet containing-
. pirny curious and costly relics from Greece
" Kerne and Egvpt and a mummy from Mc-
hemet Ah a cane given him by lalleyrand
and Napoleon's gold wash bowl given him
bv young Napoleon.
I was invited by the Judge of Prince M's
Domain to accompany him lo K. the chief
village onUhe estate andsee the Palace of the
Prince. It is about four miles distant and
we had a barouche and a span of his fine
black horses belonging to the Estate with a
driver who wore buttons bearing the Prince's
coat of arms. As we approached the village
40 or 50 of the tenants were washing sheep
and although the day was cold they all stood
with their hats off whilst the Judge spoke
with them. The Palace is about 150 feet
long with wings oneacrrside at right angles
of 100 feet. It was built in 1S39; and is a
-ery beautiful building. The situation of it
is rural hills trees and a pond and near the
ruins of an old castle which was builj 400
years since and destroyed by the Hussites in
the 30 year's war.
Lightning. An article in the London
United Service Magazine contains some ob
servations relative to the influence of geolo-l
gh5a7n7fiutihuu in prGiTuSmg lightning in
those parts of the globe where thunder storms
are most frequent in their occurrence and
most destructive in their effects. The im-
pression has prevailed very generally that
thunder storms are more frequent and dan-
gerous in mineral countries than any other.
JVlr. Dalton who resided several years in the
Eastern Archipelago and who visited seve-
ral of the Borneo tribes describes the country
as having to one approaching within tweiity
miles of Pcrgottan. a most dreary and desolate
appearance. On a surface of more than a
thousand square miles there is no vestige of
life either animal or vegetable. The coun-
try is one great mineral region producing
iron of a very superior quality.
' In no other part of the world" he says
: have 1 observed lightning produce so tre-
mendous an effect that of a forked description
playing upon the ground for a space of seve-
ral minutes in infinite mazes of zig zags. In
whatever part of the heaven the lightning ap-
pears to this spot it is a I ways attracted." From
this circumstance the natives of the adjacent
country are impressed with the belief that
the district is the peculiar abode of evil spirits.
A powerful barrier to intellectual advance-
ment is a profusion of miscellaneous objects
inviting attention amusing the fancy and
frittering away the feelings and thoughts.
This is one reason why the wealthy who are
occupied with elegant trifles or the industri-
ous classes who are seeking to be wealthy
or busied with the means of obtaining a sub-
sistence so rarely excel in the departments of
the mind. It is not uninslructive lo hear
Goethe whose life was devoted to literature
and' who has been accused of not mingling
sufficiently in practical affairs complain on
reviewing his career of the diffusion of his
faculties among so many things unadapted to
the proper workings of genius.
A ' Bronchitis. One drop of Croton Oil
-rubbed daily on the external surface of the
throat it is said- in the Eastern papers has
recently effected a complete cure of this dis-
tressing malady in the course ot three weeks.
. Jt produces a singular but powerful eruption

Jefferson county New York made in the
months of May and June from his dairy of
ten cows eight tubs of butter weighing eight
hundred and seventy-five pounds (uett
weight) being a fraction short of forty-four
pounds per month per cow on an average.
Toads. Never destroy the toad ! He is
a benefactor to the farmer and one of the
cleverest and most efficient " operatives" he
can possibly employ In the season of buns
and flics a toad will do more towards the
preservation of a garden than a man: and all
lie requires of your hands for this valuable
assistance is the freedom of your garden
walks and beds and the paltry shelter of a
chip or turf! He meddles with no one's
business but his own constantly avoiding
company and mient only on extirpating those
voracious insects by whose jaws the beauty
0 the garden is so frequently laid low. Far-
mers who cannot conveniently keep hens for
the protection of their garden vegetables can
raise no reasonable objection0 against keeping
a few toads Thpy do not necessarily dimin-
ish the treasure of the exchequer nor intrude
themselves into scenes where they are not
