"SWej our possession cannot be short of 80000 bales
of cotton and some 10000 hogsheads of sugar
besides an equally valuable return freight in
a. merchandize Ac. It should not be forgotten in
this connection that our canal will be comple-
ted with four or five feet water within two or
three months and will be in connection with
the above road and our readers may judge for
themselves whether a pretty good share of its
business will not come direct to this city.
juk e iaT0 heretofore expressed the opinion
'Htha-tr city is quite as much interested as
. Houston is in this road West of the Brazos. A
large share of this trade has heretofore gono
to tbe Western bays which must now be turned
in this direction by means of this rood. We
believe we are within bounds in sayiig the
actual immtdialc increase of our trade by this
improvement will not be less than $1500000 to
(2000000 annually while the amount will bo
increasing from year to year. By a careful ca-
titsate it has been ascertained that the rich
region of couatry directly tributary to this
road is epe3sle of producing more cotton and
sugar tian is vine produced in the whole State.
In view of these facts we cannot bat think that
ear clfezBBS will at once see their interest in
- this enterprise and contribute any further aid
that may be necessary to complete it in time
for the next Fall crops.

Capt. John Duncan and Mr. John Adrionce ore
now in our city on business connected with the
construction of the Houston Tap and Brazoria
railroad west of the Breios river. They inform
us that the grading of this road is now com-
pleted nearly throngh Brazoria and Matagorda
counties to the Wharton county line and that

eHsll either of cedar or live oak and the utmost

terial of the best quality. This section of the
rood probably possesses advantages over any
other in Texas in having an abundant supply
of tbe best material at hand as it passes
through a region covered with the best ce-
dar and live oak. The bridge over the Ber-
nard is progressing rapidly and it is believed
that it will be the best and most durable struc-
ture of the kind in Texas or perhaps in tbe
South for the timbers are all of the most mas-
sive lire oak with nothing but the heart and
therefore almost as durable and nearly as heavy
as iron. The above nasned gentleman say they
expect the road will be put in operation as far
as the county line of Wharton in about four
months so that it will be ready in tune for the
next fall crops. The value of this road will be
better appreciated when we bear in mind that
it will not only command nearly all the trade
of Brazona Matagorda and Wharton counties
but will draw a large amount of trade from
counties still farther West. The aggregate

We were the other day again called upon to
record another change of phase in the aftstrs
of the Galveston Heasisn k EeatoKQ Kail-
road Company whieb was sold out uader the
execution issued upea judgBeata efetaised by
those who have been termed "tbe Domestic
Creditors" in cautradUtlnctton to the "Bond-
holders" and was purchased far the sum of
128000 by Hr. B F. Terry as Trusleefor the
Home Creditors who by to9 statute law of our
State became tbe oorperators under the
Charter and succeed to all tbe rights and im-
munities of the old Company except the bal-
ances upon stock subscriptions which are left
subject to the costrol of tbe Board of Direc-
tors existing at the time of the sale.
And cow again we announce to'the public
still another change in the condition of this
most extraordinary Railroad. On Saturday
the domestic creditors who had become tho
owners again transferred the road franchise
rolling stock Ac. to Ibe following gentlemen
who are now tho owsers. and have the entire
control of the Road to wit : -Messrs. A. F.
James Wm. R. Smith Zauffman & Klccner
E. B. Mchols k Co. Sorley Smith & Co.
BriKgs A Yard Ball Hatchings 4 Co. T. H.
UaiBhani Gilbert R. D. O. Mills J. &
bTuhn.
These gentlemen have obligated themselves
to pay all the judgment creditors together
with the amount of subscriptions paid by cer-
tain citizens of Q aires to a to put the road in
running order. They pay ten pr cent of the
whole amount down with interest of ten per
cent on the balance and to pay also twenty-five
per cent of the gross earnings of the road
annually.
" Old things are done away and all things are
become new." We trust that this figure of
speech may be fulfilled in the spirit as well as
the letter and that the forthcoming administra-
tion of the aSairs of that Company may result
is the successful working of the Road as well
as the early payment of the debt for which pnr-
poso the Road has beta sold. We oro welt
awai$ of the difficulties which hare beset the
path' of the future operators of this much en
tangled enterprise. But they are not insur-
mountable and If wisdom and unanimity shall

iy ieel encouraged to hope for tho most sit
tsfaclory result and that the public will no
longer be debarred from the fall use and enjoy-
ment of this great highway for traffic and travel.
It will be seen that the present owners ore men
of the highest responsibility in our city and
will ensure public confidence in this Road If
confidence can be secured after so much mis-
management We do not now feel inclined to
recur to the gross mismanagement of the old
Company which has so long delayed tho faulld-
ingof this Road and cut off the merchants of
thiscity and the people of the interior from its
benefits but shall contest ourselves by calling
the attention of the present owners to this fact
and hope they will avoid the rocks upon which
their predecessors have so signally foundered.
Whatever legal difficulties may beset them in
the onset tho new corporation shonld feel en-
couraged to hope for the most signal success
from the united sympathies of our leading mer-
chants and a well-sustained public opinion in
their behalf; and we do not believe after au
that has transpired in the history of this Com
pany to taint its proceedings with at least a
suspicion of fraud that any legal attempt will
be made to displace any management of this
Road which may result in its success for the
public benefit
The great blight to this enterprise the Ixxjut
itock distributed ad libitum among the specu-
lators to represent the prospective value of
the Road and upon which not a dollar of money
was ever paid has been expunged by this sale-1
and cannot intervene as heretofore to pre-
vent the accumulation of capital to finish up
the work of the Road connect it with the
Houston Central build the required depots
and to place the necessary amount of rolling
stock upon it to meet the demands of its busi-
ness. The Claim or Texas to her rrmer
Saata Vo Territory.
Wo published a short time since a portion of
the debate in tbe United States Senate between
Senators Wilson of Massachusetts and Wig-
fall of Texas wherein tbe former stated that
Gen. Houston had admitted that Texas had no
right or legal title to the Santa Fe Territory
for which she had received the ten millions of
dollars. When Mr. Wigfall interrogated Mr.
Wilson as to the particular time place and cir-
cumstances under which that declaration was'
made Mr. Wilson replied that his recollection
was not distinct as to all tho circumstances but
he was positive that he had expressed senti-
ments to that effect in the. discussion on that
subject.
On reading the Congressional Qlobo'a report
of these remarks by Senator Wilson we were at
once reminded of the fact that we had seen the
I very same declaration oaio the absence of all
title in Texas to said Territory in several pub-
ltobeo reports or Oen. Ilouewn's epcecbcsTn
Texas and many others have 'informed us that
they have also a distinct recollection that Gen.
Houston had in several of his published speech-
es claimed credit for having o managed our
pretended claim to said Territory aa to secure
the ten millions for it.
Our attention has just been called to one of
the reported speeches in which Gen. Houston
took that ground we mean the speech delivered
by him at San Jacinto on the Oth of June 1S55
on which occasion he gave some account of tbe
Campaign oriSSG in the course of which Gen.
-Lamar Judge Bumet and Gen. Sherman were
presented in dark colors for tho use of the future
historian of Texas. Preliminary to this histor-
ical review Gen. Houston alluded to some of his
public acts in Congress and in speaking of the
sale of our New-Mexican Territory ho used the
following words :
" He said as annexed Tezss bad unbounded
-'resources. In her settlement of boundaries
" with the United States she had obtained ten
"millions of dollars for a strip of country that
"she had no more right to than he had to' any
"man's land within Ms hearing."
Many of our readers will recollect that Gen.
Lamar Gen. Sherman and Judge Bornet each
soon after published a defence of himself
against the charges made in that speech and
as the report of tho speech was corroborated aa
correct by many who heard it and was not
denied by any to be eo we presume the above
extract from it will not be dented to be sub-
stantially if not literally true. If not true it
would of course here been contradicted at tbe
lime as it was very extensirety pu blished.
DiATnop Da. Caitrsit Dr. Wm. V. Carper
died abont 8 o'clock on Sunday morning and
his remains were taken to their last resting
place at 4 r. x. the same day. Dr. C. was one
of the oldest citizens of Galveston and bad
suffered long but with christian fortitude under
the fatal disease which finally terminated bis
mortal career. Ho was One of the oldest and
most exemplary members of the benevolent
order of Odd Fellows in this city and his fu-
neral rites were performed by them In accor-
dance with their usages. Tho remains were
first borne to the Episcopal church followed by
a large procession of the order and citizens
generally where the services of ihe church
wore read by Rev. Mr. Eaton. Thence tbe pro-
cession followed their departed brother to (he
cemctry when the services of the order were
read by Mr. U. Tyson preceded by a brief
bat very appropriate and impressive sketch of
the life of tbe deceased delivered "by Mr. O.

Botetourt county Virginia in April 22d 1S06
in which State he was educated for .he medical
profession. He soon after commenced practice
