Arrival of Jenny Linfl in Now
Orleans.
Tlio broad wharvc3 in front of the
Jlacc tVAimei First Municipality wcru
Lrmulcdyeatciday afternoon with persons
awaiting tho arrival of the steamship
Falcon mid on lier as passengers from
Havana Mus Jenny Lind and suite and
Mr. llirnum and family. Many persons
were drawn thitlicr also from curiosity to
witucass the first landing of this lino of
largo steamers in iho lurst Municipality
and at so central n part of its levce. The
event is of much impottance to tho com-
merce and treasury of tho municipality.
Tho Falcon drew near the' wharf her
duck crowded with pa3seugeis from stem
to stern the rough-looking hoarded Cali-
forniins with their luggage and arms and
uncouth cxtciior being in a decided
Mi.ijority and forming a very picturesque
feature in tho picture. The largo and
uowded steamer taken with the wharves
Icrcc and street lined with hacks cabs
mid drays and about two thousand lookers
on also Willi the splendid Pontalba build-
Iiihi tho square the cathedral and court
edifices as a back-ground mndo upa very
striking and animated scene.
Of course alt eyes were fixed on the
after deck in search of Miss Lind or at
least of Mr. Harnum but nothing could
ho seen of cither. The efforts of hun-
dreds of inquisitive individuals to hoard
tho vessel after slio landed occasioned
much amusement and gave constant occu-
pation to various policemen who guarded
the gangway.
Finally tho custom-house officers com-
pleted their formalities and thepassen-
gcrs headed by tho Californians began
to Icatc tho essel. TVow might ho wit-
nessed tho arduous efforts of rival boarding-house
runners to entrap the unnarr
strangers and carry litem (oiT body
baggage and heard. Tho unhappy vic-
tims inarched oft' in files gmiling and
unconscious of ilicir sad fate.
After wailing a longtime alady phinly
dressed oppcared at tho gangway. She
was rccoznized as Jcnnv Lind. A tprri-
blc rush wa made io catch a glimpse of
ncr. wno cninusiasuc gentleman hat in
hand summarily knocked over several
unfortunates who could not get out of his
way in time. He was blind lo everything
but Jenny Lind's green ail. Apparent-
ly she became frightened at the crowd
and tho idea of traversing it on foot and
retreated to the after part of the vessel.
A few moments after however about
half iho people on the wharf left it running
has rooms each one pulling Ms neighbor
out of tho way to get a sight of tlio great
canlairice and forming a mass of gazers
around tho street door of her apartments.
A largo number of ladies were op the first
story balconies. Tliey wai cd their hand-
kerchiefs; and in fine it was generally
concluded that Jenny Lind had had a
cry hearty welcome to tha Crescent
City. It turned out that Jenny hind's
waiting maid was the person so honored!
Imagiiio-iho laughter and disappointment
occasioned thereby.
Presently another grand rush was
made. A fine carriage with two prancing
uorses urote up io me gangway and
Mr. Baruum appeared leading a lady
cioaciy vciteu. ihat was Jenny lind
surt! An exciting raco took place be
tween the crowd and tho carriage ns far
as mo. a ontalua buildings accompanied
by tho same cheering ana unceremonious
pusuing anu naming. .AROtncr ilisap-
noininreni loiiowcu. Trio lady was Miss
Itaruuirr. Nearly every person on the
wharf was by this time packed in tin
narrow slreet in front of the house occu-
pied by Mis3 Lind. Kho was repeatedly
caucu ior as was Mr. llarnutn. An
immense cheer went un when old ftl'me
I'ontalba good nalurcdly presented her-
sen on ino uaicony wlicii Jenny Lind
was called out and smiled and boned
her thanks to tho laughing multitude.
Just then a small dirlv-lookinsr hack
drove up to the door. No one noticed it
and many wished it out of tho way. The
door opened and. a lady escorted by a
geiitletrjan with a gold laco hand around
his cap got out. e'omo inquisitive indi-

through tho door. The news was nuicklv
spread and the cheers and calls again
became vociferous.
As iti duty bound we stood in the
densely packed crowd as close to the
scene of operations as possible watching
and listening. Wo never saw so many
persons together who so much boro the
appearance of being nil engaged in carry
ing out an excellent joke. J lie greatest
good humor prevailed and the people
sccmeu more ocnt on getting some fun
out of the thing than to have any other
inoro sciiotts purpose. Kach man was
astonUhcd to sco his neighbor ihcre and
one-half the crowd appeared to wonder
what the other half came to sec and do.
Suddenly Jenny Lind played iho
crowd another trick and came hastily out
on the second story balcony where few
could sco her. She waved her handker-
chief energetically at tho shouting multi-
tude for a moment and then disappeared
as quickly as she came. Tho ladies
wcro disappointed llircc-fntirths of the
lookers-on were disappointed ; and it was
amidst a general fire of jokes and laughter
that iho crowd dispersed.
One fact is certain Jenny Lind "is"
or "has" arrived and we shall soon have
nn opportunity of bearing her marvelous
voice and deciding for ourselves whether
we like her or not.
In relation to Miss Lind's apartments
or house rather in the I'ontalba buildings
wo would correct n general mistake.
M'mo Pontalba has not made a free gift
of the house toMfcsLind during her stay
here; she receives Sf00 a week far it.
So much for M'mo (tumor Picayune.
A CrtocoDiLU Sroiiv. Wo lud sonic
talk iho other day with one of tho very
few survivors of tlio Kgyptian expedition
under Sir Italph Abercrouiby who has
lived to obtain the Kgyptian medal CO
)cars after it was earned. What a
mockery to wait untit there wcro not
perhaps 10 alive in the country and
then award them medals! However to
our story. When the brigade under Sir
David Dalrd was mirchingup the eastern
bank of tho Nile towards Cairo a num
ber olstragglcrs Fell behind unable from
fatigue lo keep up with the main body.
A rear-guard was consequently detached
to protect tho sirasulera and keen them
together. One of them a Highlander
however becamo so exhausted that his.
comrades were obliged to leave him to Ins
fate. Ho had not long been alone when
ho saw a large crocodile waddling towards
him with a very portentous aspect. Poor
Donald eyed tlio monster as it approached
him with feelings of intense nlarm ami.
nltbough almost unable to walk he mus-
tered up his little remaining strength and
abided the onslaught of the enemy. As
the unwieldy brute was slewing himself
around to acizo him Donald dextrously
got astride on its hack and kept his seat.
lie at once drew Ins bayonet (lor fie
had parted with his musket) and every
lime tho animal turned round its head to
bilo him he pricked it scvcicly behind its
foreleg or wherever ho could make the
steel penetrate. How long tho contest
continued Donald could not tell but ho
thought it an age. When the rear-guard
icached head quarters the General on
being informed that Donald had been
left behind immediately dipatched a cor-
poral's guard to bring him in. On com-
ing up to Donald there he was still
astrido of his Bucephalus which was by
this time nearly exhausted with the wounds
inflicted by the bayonet. The musket
soon accomplished what tho bayonet had
begun and Donald was brought into camp
little iho worao for his extraordinary en-
counter and was ever after known in tho
regiment as the Crocodile Dragoon.

"While land the Jews of the nresent

zealots who vvero concerned in the pro-
ceedings against Jesus of Nazareth we
are far from reviling IiH character or
deriding his precepts which arc indeed
for the most part the precepts of Moses
