A COLD SNAP.
Aunt Lackland lived away out In the
country in those days In tho hackwoods
Nell and I called It though to bo sure
our own placo wasn't so very populous
considering that there were seventy odd
miles between tlio two; but then wo were
on tho rlvcr-banks and a steamer ran be-
tween us and Boston once a week and we
had a shabby little newspaper and n shab-
bier lecture course and an occasional con-
cert and sleighing partle' and assemblies
nmonjr ourselves whllo out at Lackland
people lived so far apart that it was a day's
f work to niako a call.
hi AuntXackland was n widow with no
' children and wo had often urged her to
'.come to Watcrcdgc and live with us but
sho had steadily refused and thought she
shouldn't live out half her days if sho were
- to'forsako the familiar fields where her

though 1 would marry n farmer when I've-
been at boarding-school and can play tho
piano and read French I Mercy If you
should see tho young men at aterctige
In their Kid gloves and broadcloth you
wouldn't wonder that 1 wasn't ready to
fall In lovo with Ebcn Androws Tlldy."
" And what nro they llko at Watered go?"
asked Aunt Lackland.
"Llko heroes In a romance" said I
spitefully; "not at all llko Ebcn Andrews."
" No 1 reckon they're not ; heroes of
fiddle-sticks and nonsense?"
"Heroes of yard-sticks I guess" added
Tlldy.
And sure enough Ebcn did find out his
mistake not long alter; though you might
call It mine In tho long-run. One day in
Starch ho asked mo to go down Into tho
maple grove to sec the sap run and to take
a drink of it. AVo went along by a short-
cut over the fields where the snow yet
lingered In soft drifts. The afternoon was
clear ns crystal and when wo got into tho
woods the sun illuminated It shining upon
the naked trees aud creeping through the
tangled boughs till ic seemed llko a great
cathedral at evening service I thought.
There was a delicious hush there too and
once In a whllo an early bird trilled a
hesitating roundelay aud another lcspoud-
cd from somo hidden branch; and the
crows went languidly carting overhead
aud sometimes n rabbit scampeicd by and
tlio voices of tho men who wero busy over
the gypsy fire boiling down the sap made
lonjr reverberations melodious as the wind
sweeping across an iEolIau harp. Wo
drank tho sap cool and sweet as itdrlppeu
fiom the wounds In tho maple trees and
stlnrd tho boiling pot under the cross-
sticks and tho aftcrnoou faded and the
sunset blushed and looked into tho wood
and tho workmen dropped away one by
one lcaving'Ebcn and mo to follow at our
leisure. But he lingered still covering the
pot smothering tho fire though I had long
a jo warned him that tea was waiting. We
stood there side by side looking into tho
smoldering embers when I said again
" Come Eben Andrews lord of loiter-
ers I can't wait any longer."
" Neither can 1" no returned lacing me.
"I must know to-night Letty whether
you love mo or not!"
"Whether I lovo you or not!" I re-
peated. " Whatever gave you that crazy-
notion?" " Because I have been crazy enough to
love . vou Letty" he answered; "aud I
had heard that love begets love.'J
"Well wo will let by-goncs be by-
srones." said I. "I'm sure I never gave
you any encouragement. But pray don't
speak of this to Aunt Lackland."
" A man doesn't usually brag about be-
ing jilted" he answered. Now tho.tgli I
should like to have had my aunt knowl
bad refused her precious Ebcn I was suro
if she found It out there would bo an end
of my visits to Lackland ; she would never
liao allow ed Eben's happiness to be placed
in such icopardy: and somehow though
I didn't caro for Tlldy Bruce and had re
fused Ebcn and was by no means devoted
to my aunt yet I liked to go to Lackland;
I had never asked myself why and I didn't
care to know.
"Well Tlldy" said I that night after
Aunt Lackland had had prayers and Eben
had taken his candle and gone to bed and
Aunt Lackland was gvllhig fochlo that
winter and sho begged mo to stay till
spring for now that sister Nell was mar-
ried I had to do the visiting for both
and I had been nothing loath beforo; hut
I must say that 1 felt miserable and
soro about Ebcn ; and It seemed to mo
all at once that ho must think I staid be
cause I couldn't tear myself away irotn
his ncicltborhood aud that I was sorry
for what I had said down In tho maple
grovo ; and so when mother wrote that
there was to bo a grand hall at Watcr-
edgo on Christmas-night I announced
my Intention of going home. Wo had had
a remarkably coinfortablo season though
tho sleighing was tolerably good;
vet there had been no very cold
weather and folks seemed to bcllcvo
that tho naturo of winter was changed I
and theru wouldn't be any to speak ot.
Aunt Lackland wild every thing to keep
me and Ebcn o en thawed enough to say
that three wasn't the crowd he'd thought
It and tho season would ho ten miles long-
er w Ithout inc. But go I would.
"I suppose you can send mo down to
Faring to meet tho Watcrcdge stago with
John ?" I asked.
But John tho hired man hadlheuma-
tlsm
" I wouldn't trust you with any body
but Eben this season oi tho year. John
would bo suro to lose tho way ir ho hadn't
rheumatism. You might watt for tho mall-
carrlcr and drive back with him."
Tho mall anlvcd only onco a week at
Lackland.
"I shall do nothing of the kind" said
I. " I shall start to-morrow If I liavo to
walk."
"Wo couldn't hear to your -walking"
said Eben laughing "unless you wear
inv snow-shoes."
"Very well then" said Aunt Lackland
who was a trille put out " Ebcn must tako
you himself though there's no more need
of your going than there is of mylgolng to
Gretna Green. You'll llko enough get
snowed up at Fating and not reach homo
till after Christinas and servo you right !
Come Eben can't you say something to
make her stay?"
" I've said my say."
"I believe sho only wants to bo coaxed
after all" persisted my aunt.
" I daio say ; it's away women have but
I never humor them in it 1"
I wouldn't have staid after that if it had
rained blue devils all the way to Faring.
Oh I was a headstrong piece? I was set
upon showing Ebcn that them were at-
tractions In Wateredge.
It was snowing lazily tho morning wo
started.
" Take plenty of wraps children" im
plored Aunt Lackland. "I know you will
set blocked by a storm."
' Nonsense" bald I. "Tills is only a
spit and It's as mild as new cider."
And ti ue enough it was only a bpit ; it
cciscd snowing altogether before wo had
gotten five miles from Lackland and when
wo were fifteen miles on our journey old
Lightning lost a shoe. Wc-hnd expected
to reach Faring by five in the afternoon at
latest and at noon we stopped at a way-
side farm-house and got dinner and Eben
tried to hire another horse for the road
was rouffh. and presently Lightning
would bo lame : but the fanner had driven
a span Into i'-armg mat morning aim
afraid to go ont again Into the great dark
night. What a precious tiling daylight
Is ! Aren't you coming near tlio flro?
Aren't you cold Ebcn? Oh! what's
that? Somebody's dog?" ns tho door ot
tho hut trembled and a pair of sharp eyes
looked In.
" Only a wolf" laughed Ebcn. " Don't
bo troubled; he's too wise to como In;
he's nlVald of fire."
"Oh. but voti'H havo to go. out after
wood to keep the flro allvo 1 Oh Eben if
It hadn't been for mol"
" Never fear tho plno knot will keep hltn
ata respectful distance; and If that falls
why" hero's my pistol. I never tracl to
Fating without it."
" I never regarded a pistol as a bl6sslng
before" said I.
But oh what a night It was 1 I couldn't
think of nnv thine but Dr. Lane In the
nn-lln ri'itlons. Tliounh our wood fire
snapped briskly and Ebcn heated n rock
to put at my feet aiul tho buffalo robes
wcro warm as wool yet there was a
dreadful sense of Isolation and danger out
there in tlio woods with tho wind roar-
ing through the trees llko a thing pos
sessed and boushs cracking and some
times tho howl of a wolf making one's
heart stand still for an Instant. Fcihaps
you don't know what a camp In Hie woods
Is llko? Well In tho first place there's
no floor hut tho baro ground with
Riirnco bnusrhs latd over It for car
peting; It Is bnllt of half-hewn logs and it
lias a window or two with wooden shut-
ters mid there's a holo In ono cud of tho
roor for 'the smoko to pass tliiough.
Sometimes they build a rough chimney of
stones; but this hut was without that con-
venience and there were knot holes In tho
shutters aud tho door had no fastening
and sometimes tho wind blow It wide
open and gave tno a glimpse of the black
frosty nlirht outside with now anu tnen
tlio glint of a star on tho ragged edge of
cloud and tho fir-trees standing out

Her eyes snapped llko brands of fire and
the color flew all over her face. " I guess
you'll find the mistake is yours before
you'ro much older" said she. "I'll
wager though tuat fie doesn't ieei anx-
ious; ho knows you only want to be
coaxed."
Perhaps I did. But I must say it net
tled me to see how well he bore himself.
I had read In nove's how the hero was
either soured by unrequited affection or
became splendidly melancholy and moi ose
and lost his appetite; hut Eben didn't
carry out cither programme; he behaved
just as usual and passed his plato for a
second piece of pudding and made jokes
and didn't seem to mind.
" I guess Eben was joking the other
day" Tildy suggested pleasantly.
"Pretty serious joke" said I. " Sup-
posing I had said yes? "
"Then it's a supposablo case eh? I
thought as much."
It was dreadfully mean in mo to men
tion it to Tildy at all; but I just wanted
to show her that I wasn't ready to marry
Tom Dick and Ilarry because they should
see fit to ask mc to and at tho same time
I wanted to impress upon her that she was
no prophet. Tlldy was ten years my
senior and if she knew how to mislead me
for her own advantage I made It easy tor
her. I was like ono having eyes and see-
ing not. Eben never hinted love after
that however. He was always Kind and
obliging. When I went home ho often
carried me to the next town over so many
miles away where I met tho stage for
Wateredge and we had tho long lonely
road to ourselves I promise you ; but he
never once said love or pressed my hand
under tho buffalo-robes as young men
will I've been told or referred to that af-
ternoon In the maple grove which was
hardly ever outof my mlud. It was about
two years later when I made my annual
visit at Lackland at Thanksglvlng-tlme.
Thcro were only three of us to sit down to
dinner together aud Aunt Lackland said
" Of all things ono seems to need a
largo family at the holidays now I wish'
I had ten children all coming homo with
their husbands nnd babies! I do wish
Ebon would get married nnd bring a wife
hero !"
"I can't find any ono to marry me"
said Eben as cool ns a January morn-
lug. "Pooh! that's likely. Tho girl ioouW
bo a fool who'd refuse you if do say it."
I think sho sometimes forgot that he was
bone of her bono nnd flesh of her flesh.
" You'd never have to ask her but onco !"
"That depends upon the girl" said I
not thinking what 1 was saying.
" I never ehould ask her but once" said
Eben.
"How unfeeling I" said I as easy as a
cushion though heaven knows I had a
great lump In my throat aid I should
have cried If I hadn't said somcthliig disa
greeable instead.
Though we had a surprise party that
night and all tho neighbors far and near
came In sleighs if you lived within ten
miles of Lackland you wero a neighbor
and the house echoed with fun and frolic
nnd we played forfeits nnd danced In tho
big kitchen yet I felt heavy-hearted In
spite of myself. I can seo Eben now
lending In Virginia Heel with Tildy Bruce;
ho was a famous dancer but tlmt. wu tint
Tast time lioever tripped on the fantastic
toe thanks to mu !
jogged on again. Eben however knew
of a place off the lifgii-roau where ue
thought ho'd bo able to get our horse shod
but by tho time it was done it seemed al-
most dusk and when I got into the sleigh
again the cold cut me like a knife. You
know how short the December afternoons
are and jt must have been growing colder
and colder every minute only we hadn't
thought about it. Pcoplu In tlio back
woods get used to it only this was some'
thlnirl hadn't bargained lor; nnd just as
I was wishing myself back in Aunt Lack-
land's snuggery Eben reined up and said
ho must liavo taken tho wrong turn. It
was pitch-dark by this time; we couldn't
have seen our horso it he hadn't been
black or if the ground hadn't been white
with snow and the" cold pinched meat
every pore.
"Oh dear!" I cried; "how much
trouble I've given you Eben I " And
what do you think he answered?
"Nothing is trouble that I do for you
Letty."
It was as good as a hot soap-stone If
you'll pardon the comparison; it stirred
tho blood to my fingers' ends till I was all
of a glow. Well we got back upon the
highway as wo thought but It proved a
mistake and wo turned to tho right and
we turned to tho left but Faring seemed
to bo playing hide-and-seek with us.
" This beats every thing" said Ebcn.
"1 thought I knew every Inch of the road
and every road In tho country."
"Every thing looks so differently by
daylight" 1 gasped my teeth chattering
In my head.
"You aro freezing to death" said he.
"What a blockhead J am I" and just then
a bhaft broke and there wo w ere J Lost
on a dreary country road at nlno o'clock
of a bitter starless night. As luck would
have It wo had como to grief only a few
yards from a log-hut which stood out I
darkly against the nnow.
"Tho Inmates must have gone to bed"
said Eben "but wo will rouse them ;"
and ho knocked upon tho rude door which
swung open at I1I3 touch. Wo had hap-
pened on a road made for their own con-
venience by tho lumbermen nnd the hut
was tho remnant of a last year's camp de-
serted aud comfortless as a last year's
nest.
"It Is a shelter at least" said Eben "I
will build a fire Letty and stop your
chattering." And he built a Are heaven
only knows how with nothing but tho
matches he carried In his pocket to light
his steps; and ho sat me down before the
grateful blaze swathed In the bufl'ulo
robes ; and a half-burned pine knot which
ho found in the hut served him for lan-
tern while he blanketed aud led poor old
Lightning to the hovel where the lumber-
men had housed their cattle and left an
armful of straw and ho made the bolt fast
with a'plece of wood.
"Letty" said h "I'm afraid wo shall
have to stay here till daylight. I think
wo have taken somo back-country road
w hlch has led us away from Faring ; and
the shaft Is hi splinters aud there's not
an inch of ropo or any thing about the
premises and I was too big a fool to bring
any thing of tho kind. I don't know
whcio I am any more than If I'd been
bom blind. I don't know how I became
so bewildered. Wo might ride a-pllllon
but you'd frceo to death ; hero I can keep
you from perishing nt least."
"Oh let us stay hero; It Is quite com-
fortably In comparison" I eald " and I'm
darklv and taking all manner of shnpes.
It seemed to mo that Eben was always
stirring about gathering flre-wood or nt-
tendliiL' to mv comfort In somo way. I
couldn't persuade him that thcro wcro
enough buffalo-robes for us both; nnd
once while he was outside gathering fuel
I put my head out the door and It was so
cold it froze the tears on my eyelids.
Sometimes Ebcn would presume to tako
my hand In his to mako sure I was warm
aud tuck the wraps about mc more snug-
ly; nnd ho tried to disti.ict my mind from
the situation by telling me stoiles of the
wood-choppers and life on a boom of logs ;
and once or twice he tried to sing nnd ho
whistled like all the birds In tho forest
just to seem cheerful ; and at last I fell In-
to a doze and waked shivering with a
start to And the gray dawn creeping in
through the chinks and knot-holes and to
hear a strange volco outside calling
" Good-morning to you sir. Gee Bright!
How's tills for a cold snap eh? " It was
a teamster tolling up from the mill village
to haul logs; and so soon as he knew our
strait ho turned about took out his oxen
and put them up in the hovel harnessed
old Lightning into his team and drove us
Into Faring more dead than alive.
"A pretty cold snap" echoed tho land-
lord of the Sunbeam Tavern as we en-
tered : "a nrettv cold snap I tako it. Hol
loa ! what's the matter ?" '
Ebcn Jiad.sltopediromhi soatupon tlio
llooHn a dead faint ! You may guess I
was pretty well frightened as I deserred
to bo.
"It's all my fault all my fault!" I
cried forgetting tho by-standcrs and tho
strange doctors.
"Pity's sake" said tho landlady "Is tho
cold snap your fault? are you to blame for
the weather miss? I'm afraid the cold
has drove you out of your poor head.
You'd better have something hot dear."
But you know how It was. My ears
wero a trifle frost-bitten and they had to
amputate Eben's foot all because I had
been vain and headstrong about going
home and had refused to speak the truth
down In the maple grove and accept a
backwoodsman and a farmer for a lover.
Of course I married Ebcn but I didn't
deserve to; and ns for him ho says that
the cold snap insured him his greatest
blessing. florpcr'i Bazar.
