Wi: notice that our fiiond Mr. L. E.
EmvAitus Land Agent lias reduced
International Land Cerliticatcs from sixty
Lb tifty cents per acre. Surely this is
low enough for a class of proporty which
has made thousands upon thousands
wealthy in this Slate.
A guxti.hmanou Pecan street borrow-
ed a paper from our carrier yesterday
evening stating that in ten minutes ho
would tell him if he wished to buy it.
Many people do not stop to think of tho
injustico done to ourselves and tho pub-
lic by detaining tlio carriers on their
rounds. Our boys dearly earn all they
make from tho salo of their papers so if
you want a paper pay for it. .
Ye Old Folks' Concert Last Xigiit.
A largo audience gathered last night at
tho Opera IIouso to witness tho J first
Old Folk's Concert given under the aus-
pices of Prof. Bcardslee. Quire prompt-
ly tho singers tiled on to the stage with
lighted caudles in their hands and took
seats upon the raised platform prepared
for them. A motley group they present-
ed. Some thirty or forty ladies and gen-
tlemen of our city were before the audi-
ence dressed in the style of a century
ago.
Prof. Beardslco as 'tho tymist" called
tho 'singers to order and the first old
time song given was " Auld Lang Syne"
which was received with great applause.
Wo have not space nor tho inclination to
give the details of tho long and excellent
programme of music given on this occa-
sion. Wa shall simply content ourselves
with mentioning a few of tho features of
this musical entertainment. " Tho
Singing Lesson" a two-part song by
Prof. Bcardslee as Hczckiah Perkins and
Mrs. Ed. Quick as Kulrinu Van Tassel
drew forth tho hearty commendation of
tho audience.' Mra.-. Quick's voico pos
sesses sweetness and shows cultivation.
Her maimer upoa-the-stngeis. very pleas
igv
"Prof. Beardslco sans with pathetic
voico the beautiful song "Tho Sword of
Bunker Hill." Tho Tymist introduced
Experience Dimock Miss Bacon to the
audience coupling with it tho announce-
ment that Miss B. had a cold. Her au-
dience sought m vain for her cold after
hho had sung a few lines of tho melodious
air of " Old .Folks at Home." Tho entire
song was very touchingly rendered.
t " The singing Skowl" under tho chargo
of "Prof. Tewkesbury" Mr. Dixon of
our city .was ono of tho most amusing
features of the evening's programme.
Tho "Professor" wielded his baton
well sang finely himself and infused a
great deal of lifo into his class.
'" ' U Uope on ye Face Broadcast Miss
Ella Carter after an introduction to tho
audience sang " Kathleen Mavourncen"
fjf ' and being encored sang "Ueautiful Kil-
" larnoy." Wo have heard Miss Carter
sing before but do not remember to
have heard her sing with liner effect than
i f hist ' evening. She seomcdT in good
at 8 H voice tho high notes of tho songs were
reached with case
Tho two-part song " Tho Minute Gun
at Sea" by llcjtzibah Yondrum and Pea-
con Plumbcrton was well liked.
10 ' "John Anderson my Joe" tho delight-
ful old Scotch song was feelingly sung
by John and Muyyio Anderson if rot".
Beardslco aud Mrs. Mitchell. !
Tho " Honest John aud Kan" by Miss.
Grasty and Prof. Beardslco attracted at-
4 ? tention for tho excellence of tho charac-
ter singing introduced.
Mrs. C. S. West as Penelope Whittlesey
& eaug with great feeling tho touching b'al-
class.
There were many thins iu tho outer
lainnient that were not down in the pro-
gramme. Miss Moll io Durst as Aunt Pro-
priety Pobbs acted as putioncss to tho
entire class. Her antique dioss and her
coal scuttle bonnet made her observed.
Her fiequcnt bestowal of slippery elm
upon the successful singers created much
merriment.
Prof. Bcardslee deserves credit for
bringing out such a fine mimical enter-
tainment iu so short a limo.
Tho c.'ill for :i meeting of tin Directors and
Stockholders of Ino Austin and 1'nui I'm Shout
Lino Railroad Company is advertised in our
paper to come oil' in tlio City of Louisville
Ky. on Tuesday Gth July next.
Skvekae interruptions occuned during
tho progress of the concert last night
one was the going out'of the gas occa-
sioned by an inexperienced baud attempt-
ing to regulate tho ilow of gas at the
metre.
A lady fainted and was taken out of
the hall. This caused a temporary com-
motion in the audience. And during tlio
singing of ono of the pieces sonic people
left the hall. This should not have been
done out of courtesy to tho singer and
audience unless a case of absolute nec-
essity! Mr. Houkutson is erecting a fine
Gothic residence on the opposite side of
Shoal Creek. The building will be of a
very unique and tasteful style aud when
finished is expected to cost between
$5500 to $G000. Gardner & Smyth
have the contract for tho enliro building.
Jut. liobinson is also putting up a
$7000 residence in the same neighbor-
hood. We noticed some colored prisoners
en route to tho Military prison at Leav-
enworth Kansas who aro detained at
the Military Post here working in chains
in tho yards opposite tho garrison.
Seven of them aro under sentence of from
ono to live years two for desertion and
all of tho other live for misconduct that
would justify tho same punishment iu
civil life.
Two more piisoncrs.aro detained al.o
who have not yet been sentenced.
