deferring to the Homestead law now
toeforeCongress and assuming that it will
$ass tho Senate the New York Herald
alludes in the following manner to the
'effect it will have on foreign emigration:
"The emigration from Europe to this
country is already great it is every day
increasing and multiplying. From Ger-
many and from Ireland in particular it
ihas been vastly swollen; and myriads who
fiiavo not room nt home are swarming
Hike bees from crowded hives and set-
tling in this broad land where there is
ample scope and vergo enough for all.
But if the homestead bill now before
Congress should pass a new impetus will
be given to European emigration and it
will be increased to an extent that cnu
hardly be calculated. The bill enacts
that every native born citizen every for.
cijjn citizen naturalized prior to the 1st
January 1852 and every emigrant who
beforo the issuing of the patent shall
declare his intention to become a citi-
zen shall be entitled to a quarter sec-
lion (1G0 acres) of public lauds provided
lie: is the head of a family and settles on
said land and is not the owner of any
other land. The bill has passed the
House in this form and it may possibly
he amended in the Senate so us to era-

"-"grants Who have recently arrived as welt
as those who have been in the country for
any period within the last five years will
migrate from the Eastern States to the
"West and leave their places to be filled
by the new-comers from the Old World.
This bill will give a heavy blow to stock-
jobbing in those lands by Western rail-
road companies who have been monop-
olizing tho public domain for their private
- advantage under the pretence of minis-
tering to the general good ofJie country
and developing its vast resources. Far
better if the unappropriated laud is to be
diverted from the public treasury to give
it to actual settlers who will soon create
a demand for railroads in the legitimate
way and enable them to remunerate
themselves for the capital expended."
Another Cuba Expedition.
It is rumured that there is another ex-
spedition for the Island of Cuba on foot.
The Wilmington (Del.) Republican
speaking of thisruinur states that dipt.
Lewis the gentleman who was in com-
mand of the Pampero when she carried
Gen. Lopez to that Island last summer
purchased some lime since a fast sailing
schooner for the alledged purpose of trad-
ing between New Orleans and the ltiu
Grande. About the time that Captain
Lewis made the purchase above alluded
.to il was reported that twelve more ves-
self of the eamcclafrs were wanted and
could be sold in New York. The New
Orleans Trim Delta thinks it possible
that these faels may thiowsomu light on
the expedition in prospect.
. There have also been soma recent
-ilcvelopemems made in Havana which
. go to prove that ullaiis are far from being
'titirly of an unclouded character on the

Laughable Tragedy.
A somewhat amusing though serious
affair occurred a few days since about ten
miles beyond Spring Creek in tho lower
part of Grimes county. It was related to
us as follows : '
Two young men from Iowa (wo think
they had belter hail from the Green moun
tains) had been pedling various knick-
knacks between tho Brazos and Trinity
nnd having realized some three or four
hundred dollars were pn there way to
this city carrying their money in a bag.
Ala place called Mocasin a gentleman
laughingly told them that if they were not
careful how they carried their bag some
of the numerous bands of robbers which
infested the country would relieve them
of the trouble of carrying it nt all. By
this their imagination was so much exci-
ted that they considered altnost every
man they met a robber. After leaving
Mocasin nnd traveling a short distance.
they met Mi. Joseph Dates attired in .nt
full Texan Hunter's costume cap red'
flannel shirt buckskin hunting shirt antj
pants with a tin horn and rifle who in
quired if thay had seen two young men
any where about? (He bad been out
burning with two of his young' friends
Isaac Baker and Jim Pinkton and had be-
come accideutly separated from them. It
was for them ho enquired.) On receiving
an answer in the negative he left. them.
Our Iowa worthies mistaking friend
Joe for a perfect RinaldolUnaldi became
seriously alarmed and turning short olf.
madft forthcwoods. in order to avoid
tnqycatne upon anoiiief tuuircuiviuri
Jim Pinkton whom they probably
took for a second Jack Shepard. Here
was a dilemma. They could not retreat
he was armed with a double barrelled
shot gun and could shoot both before they
got ten steps off. Reflecting that as there
was only one they might despatch
him beforo his comrades could come up
they would thus render tho country good
service and be ready for the next when
he should make his appearance! So
they forthwith sung out " We know
you ! Here's our money ; come and take
it !" and drawing their revolvers com-
menced poping away at Jim in good earn-
est. Ho retreated and at the same 'time
tried to make them explain what was
the matter. But the only reply he got
to his question was "Hero's our money
come and tako it;" and tho whistling of
'a pistol ball near his cranium. Finding
lie could do nothing with them he blew
his horn lbs. his companion. Isaac Ba-
ker.who supposing he had shot something
and needed assistance come running up.
When within about ten feet ono of the
Iowa boys drew his pistol on him and
would have laid him low but that it mis-
sed fire. Baker then got further off and
tho pedlar shot at him but fortunately
without oireet. The young men finding
remonstrance useless raised their gun
and being excellent shots brought the
pedlars both down at the first fire. The
matter was then explained and tho young
men had them conveyed to Air. Baker's
houe where their wounds were dressed.
It a thought they will both recover.
Oueofihem received four and the other
three buckshot.
Thisi-s tako it all together a very sin-
gular nlFair. That two men of tumid
minds should mistake three well known
and peaceable young men fur highwaymen
and cutthroats is hard to believe ami
we think it should be examined into. If
the circumstances as related tons are cor
recr (and we have every reason to believe
theyuire) these two pedlars deserve an
apprenticeship in the penitentiary or a
frtrait jacket. Houston Beacon.
- Emigration Next Season "Wo learn
from a variety of sources 'that a very
heavy emigration may bo expected in
Texas next fall and winter. Houston
