BIBLE NOTES
By Mark Sloan, Minister, Carthage Church of Christ
“I hear you made a million
dollars in oil in Texas,” said one
man to another. Replied the
second, “Well, that report is
substantially correct, except it
wassn’t me, it was on my brother-
in-law, and it wasn’t a million, it
was a hundred thousand, and he
didn’t make it, he lost it.”
While we might chuckle at the
above story, it well illustratethe
uncontrollable nature of gossip.
Once a story has been launched,
like a ship wihout a rudder upon
the merciless sea, it is tossed to
and fro by the wild imaginations
of men who would twist, change
or outright he about what they
have heard. Common sense tells
us to be careful in
communication. Facts are often
ignored by those who would
seek to impress others with either
The Way With Gossip
good news, or bad. We are
admonished by God’s word to
“lie not one to another,”
Mark Sloan
and to always
let our speech
be seasoned
wih salt.
Gossip is
unhealthy
communication.
Before
passing along
any
information let
us ask, (1) Is it true? (2) Is it
beneficial to my hearer? (3) Is it
really all that important that I tell
others? And keep in mind that
our Lord told us, “Take heed what
ye hear: with what measure ye
meteit shall be measured unto
you: and more shall be given unto
you.” (Mark 4: 24)

beginning at 2:30 pm, at Shady
Grove MBC with special guest
Rev. Elijah Walker, Pastor of Star
of Hope Baptist Church in Na-
cogdoches^
Now to the point made in “Let-
ter to Editor” that I had quoted
scripture out of context January
8, 2004. Going to his statement:
Gal. 4:10-11 were not talking about
the Law; that I had taken them
out of context. What I am going
to do is let the fourth chapter of
Galatians do my talking. I will be
using the “New Living Transla-
tion” Holy Bible.
Think of it this way: Gal. 4:1 If
a father dies and leaves great
wealth for his young children,
those children are not better off
than slaves until they grow up,
even though they actually own
everything their father had. 2.
They have to obey their guard-
ian until they have reached what-
ever age their father set. 3. And
that is the way it was with us be-
fore Christ came. We were slaves
to the spiritual power of the
world. 4. But when the right time
came, God sent his Son, bom of
woman, subject to the Law. 5. God
sent him to buy freedom for us
who were slaves to the Law, so
that he could adopt us as his very
own children. 6. And because
you Gentiles have become his
children, God has sent the Spirit
of his Son into your hearts, and
now you can call God your dear
Father. 7. Now you are no longer
a slave but God’s own child, ev-
erything he has belongs to you.
8. Before you Gentiles knew God,
you were slaves to so-called gods
that do not even exist. 9. And now
that you have found God (or
should I say, now that God has
found you,) Why do you want to
go back again and become slaves
once more to the weak and use-
less spiritual powers of this
world? 10. You are tiying to find
favor with God by what you do
or don’t do on certain days or
months or seasons or years. Ill
fear for you. I am afraid all my
hard work for you was worth
nothing. 12. Dear brothers and
sisters, I plead with you to live
as I do in freedom from these
things, for I have become like you
Gentiles were, free from the Law.
You did not mistreat me when I
first preached to you. 13. Surely
you remember that I was sick
when I first brought you the good
news of Christ. 14. But even
though my sickness was revolt-
ing to you, you did not reject me
and turn me away. No, you took
me in and cared for me as though
I were an angel from God or even
Christ Jesus himself. 15. Where
is that joyful spirit we felt to-
gether then? In those days, I
knew you would gladly have
taken out your own lives and
given them to me if it had been
possible. 16. Have I now become
your enemy because I tell you
the truth? 17. Those false teach-
ers who are so zealous to win
your favor are not doing it for
your good. They are trying to
shut you off from me so that you
will pay more attention to them.
18. Now, it is wonderful if you
are eager to do good, and espe-
cially when I am not with you..
19. But Oh, my dear children! I
feel as if I am going through la-
bor pains for you again, and they
will continue until Christ is fully
developed in your lives. 20. How
Tenaha First United Methodist Church
_By Martha Brennion-Nease_
Tenaha First United Method-
ist Church met Sunday, Febru-
ary 22nd. The regular service
times on Sunday are Sunday
School at 10:00 am. Bob Davis
and George Bowers alternate
with Brother Jim Bradley leading
the Adult Sunday School class.
The Youth Sunday School class
is lead by Brack Harrison with
Leslie Bradley filling in as
needed. The Worship service is
at 10:45 am, with choir rehearsal
between Sunday School and the
Worship service. The hymns
were “Seek Ye First” and “Take
Time To Be Holy”. The scrip-
ture was Luke 11: 1 -04. The
title of the sermon was “Essen-
tial Elements of Prayer”. The 9
essential elements of prayer are
adoration, confession, restitu-
tion, thanksgiving, forgiveness,
unity, faith, direct petition, and
submission. This was a short
sermon. Pastor Bradley will be
doing a series of sermons on the
Lord’s Prayer. This prayer does
contain these 9 essential ele-
ments. This week we celebrated
William Weeks birthday. We had
Nita (Mrs. Ben) Gauthier, and her
2 daughters Tiny and Sandra vis-
iting with Mary Graves. We also
had one member present that we
have not seen for a while. It is
always exciting to see additional
faces in the congregation. This
Sunday was an abbreviated ser-
vice. Pastor Jim Bradley was
needed to consecrate the new
building at Fields Chapel Church.
This was the previous charge of
Pastor Bradley. The church was
destroyed by arson the week af-
ter Pastor Bradley came to the
Tenaha-Stockman charge. This
is a small congregation, approxi-
mately 32 - 34 in average Sunday
attendance. The new facility
cost approximately $185,000.00.
This facility was constructed and
is debt free!!! Praise the Lord.
Pastor Bradley would also be
cooking for the fish fry dinner cel-
ebration. Tuesday, F ebmary 24th
is Mardi Gras (French for Fat
Tuesday) a traditional time of
feasting, fun and frolic prior to
the beginning of the Lenten Sea-
son. Wednesday, February 25th
there were Ash Wednesday Ser-
vice Services. These services are
open to the community. Tenaha
UMC had a service at 6:30pm.
The Tennessee Presbyterian
Church had their annual Pancake
Supper at 5:00pm followed by
their service. This will also be
the opening of Mel Gibson’s
movie The Passion. This is an
excellent time reflect on or study
about Christ whether you are a
Christian already or not. This is
the beginning of the preparation
for Easter. Easter will be on Sun-
day, April 11, 2004. Watch the
newspaper for additional items
about Easter services. The
Tenaha First United Methodist
Church web site address is
<http: //gbgmchurche s. gbgm-
umc.org/tenaha/>. Visit the site,
it is continually being updated
and new features are being
added. Jim Bradley hopes to add
the text of his weekly messages
for those that may miss some
sennons. Sunday, February 22nd,
was the Stone Feast Lunch in
Tenaha in the school cafeteria.
This was a service project of the
Shelby County Junior Chamber
of Commerce and the Tenaha
Beta Club. The donations raised
will be used to assist the elder
citizens in the area. Last year
many of the recipients were
blessed with the assistance on
their utility bills. Thursday, Feb-
ruaiy 19th was the planning meet-
ing for the East Texas United
Methodist Small Church Com-
bined Choir program for the Eas-
ter season. The choir will be un-
der the direction of Dr. Bonita
Lowrie, Music Director at Garri-
son. This year the event is to be
hosted by the Tenaha United
Methodist Church. This pro-
gram will be presented on Sun-
day, April 4th (Palm Sunday) at
6:30 pm. The offering from this
service will be sent to the Heifer
Project International. Rehears-
als are scheduled at the Tenaha
First United Methodist Church
for Saturday, March 6th at 3:00
pm and Saturday, March 20th at
3:00 pm. We hope to have par-
ticipation from Garrison, Paxton,
Timpson, Stockman, and
Tenaha. You do not have to be
a member of a United Method-
ist Church to participate in the
choir, simply show up at the re-
hearsals. Garrison UMC pro-
vides all the robes for the choir
participants. A list of the hymns
and copies of the music will be
available. If you need that con-
tact Martha Brennion-Nease at
Tenaha City Hall. Remember
there is always a need for an
audience. Wednesday, March
3rd will be the Administrative
Board Meeting at 6:30pm. Sun-
day, March 7th will be the Men’s
Prayer Breakfast. The PRAYER
LIST is printed on the back of
each week’s bulletin. If you did
not attend church for any rea-
son but would like a copy of the
bulletin leave a message on the
church answering machine 248-
2246. A bulletin can be mailed
to you or delivered. Bro. George
Helton is undergoing chemo.
I wish I were there with you right
now, so that I could be more
gentle with you. But at this dis-
tance I frankly don’t know what
else to do. 21. Listen to me, you
who want to live under the law,
Do you know what the law really
says? 22. The scriptures say that
Abraham had two sons, one from
his slave wife and one from his
freeborn wife. 23. The son of the
slave-wife was bom in a human
attempt to bring about the fulfill-
ment of God’s promise. But the
son of the freeborn wife was bom
as God’s own fulfillment. 24. Now
these two women serve as an il-
lustration of God’s two cov-
enants. Hagar, the slave wife, rep-
resents Mount Sinai where people
first became enslaved to the Law.
25. Andnow Jerusalem is just like
Mount Sinai in Arabia, because
she and her children live in sla-
very. 26. But Sara, the free woman,
represents the heavenly Jerusa-
lem. And she is our mother. 27.
That is what Isaiah meant when
he prophesied: “Rejoice, a child-
less woman? Break forth into loud
and joyful song, even though you
never gave birth to a child. For
the woman who could bear no
children now has more than all the
other women”. 28. And you, dear
brothers and sisters, are children
of the promise, just like Isaac. 29,
And we who are bom of the Holy
Spirit are persecuted by those who
want us to keep the Law, just like
Isaac, the child of promise, was
persecuted by Ismael, the son of
the slave wife. 30. But what do
the Scriptures say about that?
“Get rid of the slave and her son,
for the son of the slave woman
will not share the family inherit-
ance with the free woman’s son”.
31. So, dear brothers and sisters,
we are not children of the slave
woman, obligated to the Law. We
are children of the free woman, ac-
ceptable to God because of our
faith... (continued next week)
