Election judges for the May
7 Democratic Primary were an-
nounced last week by Ted Whit-
low Bell County Democratic

Bulldogs Get
Tripple Plav
In 2-1 Win
The Bartlett Bulldogs chalked
up their first conference win
of the season Tuesday after
noon downing Academy 2-1'
with some outstanding fielding
including a triple play in the
first inning and a double in the
second.
Butch Henry went all the
way on the mound for the Bull
dogs giving up only two hits and
one run. He was hampered
somewhat by wildness. but was
backed up by sparkling fielding
play by his team mates. He
walked 9 and struck out four.
Academy's Martin also turn-
ed in good pitching allowing two
hits but the (Bulldogs took him
for two runs. He struck out 12
men.
The triple play came in the
first inning after Henry had
walked the first two batters.
Bennet hit a line drive to the
pitcher who threw to first for
the second out and first to sec-
ond for the third out; Henry to
Messer to Franz.
In the second inning the Bull-
dogs got a double play after the
first batter got a base on balls
and the second batter tagged a
hot grounder to third baseman
Ferguson. Ferguson tossed to
Franz at second for the first
out and Franz threw to Messer
at first for the second out. Fer-
guson also made an assist on
the third out.
After one out and loading the
bases in the third frame Henry
struck out the hitter and the
catcher picked off the man on
third to stop the threat.
A long fly by Swaim to left
field in the fifth was dropped
and a run came in. Stomatik
singled in the 6th.
Academy left 10 men on base
during the game.
Henry got a hit after two
were out in the first but was
unable to score when Messer
-walked and Schwertner struck
out.

The Bulldogs went down in
order in the next three innings
-with five strike outs and slow
grounders.
The first Bulldog run was
scored In the 6th when Henry
walked and stole second and
third and scored on an error on
a grounder by Messci .
Messer stole second and third
and scored on a base hit by
Cocke.
The Bulldogs will go to Cop-
peras Cove Friday. The season
will end next week with two
games on tap. Tuesday will see
Sharp and Bartlett battle here
and Friday Bartlett will host
Sajadp for-the final game of the
reason ..
Czarowitz Named
Election Judge
A. F Czarowitz has been ap-
pointed election judge for the
Williamson County box in Bart-
lett for the May 7 Democratic
Primary. Voting will take place
in the R. E. A. building.
Mr. Czarowitz noted a change
in the election law. If voters do
not have their poll tax receipts
!with them they will have to sign

have been lost misplaced or left
at home.
Also those attending the pre
! convention must have their
poll tax with them.
The precinct convention will be
held at 2:30 p. m. in a room of
the R. E. A. building. No one will
be elected to the county con
vention who does not attend the
precinct convention.
The Williamson County con-
vention will be held in George-
town atl0:0p a. m. on May 14th
m the District Court Room.
Bartlett-Granger
Road Contract
Is Approved
John H. Garner of Belton and
B. H. C. Materials Co. of Temple
were awarded the contract for
widening and paving 5.7 miles
of State Highway 95 from the
Bell County line in Bartlett to
the south city limits of Gran-
ger. Their bid totaled $162835.
Contracts were awarded by
the Stafe Highway Commission
last Thursday when bids were
opened on road construction to-
taling 27 million dollars in the
State of Texas.
A total of 120 days will be
allowed for competion of the
Granger-Bartlett road project j

Speaks To
Wednesday Club
Dr. Ralph Clearman spoke to
the Women's Wednesday Club
on Modern Medicine at their
meeting last week basing his
talk on "hypertension" and the
medical -value of -the cortizones.
A question and answer session
followed the talk.
Mrs. E. B. Ware was hostess
to the group at her home with
Mrs. Bill Gelner as co-hostess.
Arrangements of Iris were used
in decorating.
Mrs. C. E. Lamb presided as
president pro-tem. She announc-
ed that the State Federation
had been redistricted and the
local club will be in the 1-8
county Capitol District.
Miss Bessie Skinner gave a
report on the library and the
club voted to purchase some
children's books before the li-
brary opens for the summer
session.
Members were reminded of
the State Federation Meeting
to be held in Austin May 2-4.
The next and final meeting of
the year will be held May 18 at
the home of Mrs. Stanley Sch-
wertner with Mrs. Floyd Fore
hand as co-hostess A covered
dish luncheon and installation
of officers will highlight the
meeting Mrs. Bill Gelner will
install the officers Roll call

Favorite Program of the Year"

Wins District In
Journalism Events
Miss Demetrice Moore Bart-
lett High School junior won
three first places out of five
events in journalism in the reg-
ional Interscholastic League
meet held in San Marcos Fri-
day and she will now compete
in the state events in Austin
May 6th and 7th.
The Bartlett team of Miss
Moore and Bobby Valenta took
first place in the team totals.
Demetrice took first places in
news writing feature writing
and headline writing second
place in editorial writing and
fourth place in copy reading
making her the high individual
scorer1 in the conference ''B"
regional meet.
Bobby Valenta placed fifth

meets in San Marcos over the
week-end. George 'Fowler placed
second in senior boy's declama-

to the state meet. Helen Miller
placed third in girl's extempor-
aneous speech.
Also the Bartlett High School
one-act play under the direct-
ion of Stanley Schwertner plac-
ed third in the regional meet.
Robert Grigsby was named to
the all-star cast.
The entire journalism class
of Bartlett High School ac-
companied by their instructor
Stanley Schwertner will journ-
ey to Austin next Friday and
Saturday where Demetrice will
enter the journalism events and'
the other members of the class
will attend the meetings of the
interscholastic
League- Press

Sheik Messer Wins
Local Correct
Posture Contest
Miss Sheila Messer has again
been selected winner of the Cor-
rect Posture Contest according
to Dr. George C Fowler local
chairman. Miss Este Fana Cor-
tes was selected as alternate.
Miss Messer daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Aubrey Messer was
last years local winner and also
the District winner. Shellaced
third in the State contest.
Contestants were judged on
good posture and straight spine
and also on poise beauty and
personality.
Miss Messer will go to Aus-
tin for the selection of the Dist-
rict winner to be made Thurs-
day night May 5 at the Dris-
kill Hotel in Austin. Dr. Fowler
is also District chairman for
the contest.
This contest is sponsored by
the Texas State Chiropractic
Association in conjunction with
"Correct Posture Week" May
1-7 which is being observed
throughout the nation;
Mayor Cy Young has also
proclaimed the week of May 1-7
as "Bartlett Correct Posture
Week."

Receive Plaque As
Top Flight Farmer
C. B. Hodge of Salado will re-
ceive a plaque award for being
selected as the outstanding con-
servation farmer in the Little
River San Gabriel Soil Conser-
vation District in 1959.
The plaque will be presented
by the Belton Lions Club at
their regular meeting on April
28 in Belton.
The program in connection
with the plaque presentation
will be provided by the soil con-
servation district supervisors.
Local persons planning to at-
tend are G. E. Kretzschmar
board chairman and Adrian I.
Moore Work Unit Conserva
tionist with the Soil Conserva-
tion Service.

Second And Third
In Spelling Bee
So near and yet so far
Bartlett students Samye Hill
and Phil Lindsay came so close
to winning the Temple Daily
Telegram Spelling Bee Satur-
day and permanent possession
of the gleaming gold trophy
but were edged out by Rachel
Green 14 year old eighth grade
speller from Rogers.
Samye Hill placed second and
received $20 in the contest fall-
ing out of the running by miss-
ing "consultation." Miss Green
spelled the word correctly and
went on to spell "imminent"
and win the trophy.
Phil Lindsay stumped on the
word "propitiate" came in third
place and received a prize of
$15.
The 38 starting contestants
in the contest represented 19
Bell county schools
Having won the contest for
the past two years Bartlett
would have had permanent pos-
session of the trophy if they
had won again this year. Per-
manent possession can also be
gained if one speller wins the
contest two years in a row.

Well Attended
Some 131 persons were on
hand Tuesday night at the an-
nual Chamber of Commerce
Banquet to hear James M. Curl
of Temple speak on "What Price
Indifference."
Dr. George Fowler was toast-
master for the evening. T. A.
Crittenden president of the
Chamber of Commerce gave a
short talk and visitors were in-
troduced. past year's york and stressed

Next Week Is
"Clean-Up" Week
Spring" clean-up indoors and
outdoors will be in full swing
here next week the officially
designated "Clean-Up Week" in
Bartlett.
The City Council has set the
week of May 2-6 as celan up-
week here. This is the time to
clean up the debris rearrange
and make a cleaner more at-
tractive place to live.
The City will aid in the cam-
paign by picking up cans and
other unburnable trash if placed
in containers in available places.
Not only will cleaning help
the appearance but will help the
health problem as well by de-
stroying the breeding paces for
flies and mosquitoes.
It is the hope of the Council
that all residents will join in the
campaign for a cleaner more
attractive and healthier com-
munity. Lightning Strikes
Hunt Home
Lightening struck the W. A.
Hunt home east of Bartlett
Tuesday night damaging the
roof and electrical system.
The incident occurred during
an electrical storm in which .70
inches of much needed rain fell
in Bartlett and larger amounts
east of town.
Luther 'Robinson reported
that in addition to the rainfall
Tuesday night .40 inches had
fallen during the week-end.
Methodist Church
To Observe
"Children's Day"
The First Methodist Church
will observe "Children's Day"
at the 10:50 a. m. service Sun-
day. Children of the church will
sing in the choir for this service.
The pastor's sermon subject is
to be "Everlasting Childhood."
Special music will be presented
by the children.
Children's Day is held an-
nually the first Sunday in May
to launch "National Family
Week." The week cluminates
with "Mother's Day" on May
8. A family service is to be
conducted on the night of May
8..
Beginning May 1 the evening
worship service will be moved
to 7:30 o'clock. The Methodist
Youth Fellowship will meet at
6:45 p. m. starting on the same
date.
Visitors are always welcome
at the worship services and
activities of the Barltett Meth-
odist Church.

Mr. Horace Keith program

Brotherhood announces the
Laymen's Revival April 291
through May 1 at the First Bao-
tist Church. The Revival will be
led by lay preachers and will
feature the work and interest
of men in the church's work.
The Brotherhood of the First
Baptist Church will sponsor the'
Revival.
This past week has been:
