TWC finds road toug
Roundballers fall to 5-9 record
by Tom Hatfield

Rambler Sports Editor
With a new year upon us and the holidays behind us every-
one is looking forward to a better new year including the TWC
basketball team. While everyone else was enjoying the break
from school and living it up, the roundballers were hard at
work in an effort to improve their season record.
They found it quite difficult though as all six of their holi-
day games were away from home and were able to come up
only once on the top side of the score.
While most of us were finish-
ing finals way back on Decem-
ber 16, the Rams opened their
district play against Texas
Southern in Houston g.nd two
days later were in Prairie View
with their second district en-
counter. Not only was the weath-
er freezing then but so was the
opposition as TWC was turned
out in the cold by Texas South-
ern 107-63, and Prairie View
76-48.
Using a full court press Texas
Southern pushed the Rams into
numerous errors and turnovers.
Moving out to an early lead,
TSU was never challenged as
the Rams could hit on only 33
percent of their floor shots. The
losing effort saw Skip Great-
house pace the Rams with the
only double figure total 14, with
Mike Pate chipping in 9 and
Randy Parham 8.
A change of scenery brought
the Rams to Prairie View with
the hope of evening their district
record but were outdistanced in
the second half for a final of
76-48. Again pressed into nu-
merous turnovers the Rams
slowed the game down in1" the
first half to thefr liking but were
able to get off only seven shots.
Only down by nine after inter-
mission Prarie View began to
outdistance the Rams and build
up their commanding lead -Brian
Comstock hit on five from the
field to collecT""a team high 10
points with Skip Greathouse and
Eddie Wright each contributing
9.
With the two opening defeats
in district play the Rams also
fell to a 4-6 season slate. Taking

a short break they made a reso-
lution to get „ back on the win-
ning track and movea to the
Top O' Texas tournament in
Wichita Falls with this in mind.
With visions of another tourna-
ment championship to put next
to their Cowtown Tourney crown
the Rams and seven other teams
from the Texas-Oklahoma area
assembled at Midwestern Uni-
versity for the January 4-6 play-
off.
Drawing Central Oklahoma
State in the opening round the
Rams were out to show the, Okies
just how basketball should be
played. Slowing the game down
they played it close until the
final stanza when they came out
on the short end of the score by
a 59-44 count.
After finding themselves in the
consolation bracket with the op-
ening defeat the Rams put it all
together with a convincing win
over Wayland Baptist and moved
into the consolation champion-
ship. With Eddie Wright, Skip
Greathouse, and Randy Parham
finding the range the Rams went
to the halftime dressing room
with a,four point lead 38-34.
The second half saw the Rams
begin to strptch out to a com-
manding lead with much improv-
ed shooting and defense. Waylancf"
tried to mount a comeback but
were held off and the Rams
brought out a 70-61 victory. Skip
Greathouse .finished the game
with 23 points and Eddie Wright
close behind with 20 and Randy
Parham the other double figure
scorer with 11.
The consolation championship
saw the Rams face the host team,
Midwestern. With visions of the
victory cake in sight the Mid-
western Indians took it out of
their mouth and upended the
Rams in a convincing 91-54 vic-
tory. Putting four players in
double figures the Indians broke
to an early lead and never gave
it up. Eddie Wright was the only
Ram that found the range and
finished with 20 points, and Alvin
Scott put in half that for the
scoring honors.
Last Monday while we were
beginning to register and say
hello to all our classmates and
friends, the Rams once again
took to the road for the final
of a six-game roadtrip against
Southwestern University. Hustl-
ing up and down the court the
Rams were barely outdistanced
at the half by a 37-42 count.
Southwestern opened the sec-
ond half with a torrid burst and
began to move ahead of the
Rams. Though four players hit in
double figures the Rams were
unable to overcome the face pace
of Southwestern and were finally
downed by 66-75. Eddie Wright

Rams host Missouri,
excitement in store
You thought the excitement and noise of
the first week back was all over after today,
right? Well, you're dead wrong and head
basketball coach A1 Peters and his team will
be out to prove it tomorrow as they take the
floor against the University of Missouri. The
7:30 tip-off is a non-district contest in the Sid
Richardson Physical Fitness center.
This is the second of a current three game
home stand for the Ram roundballers. Last
night's district rematch and against Prairie
View A&M and next Wednesday's encounter
with Texas Southern are both rematches for
the Rams who have handed defeats by both
teams in their two earlier opening district en-
counters. The TWC basketballers will be out
to return the favor before^fHe home fans and
meanwhile stay in the thick of District 8 com-
lition...

The Rams can only show a 0-2 m^rk j
tar with just eight more district games and* a
5-9 overall slate for the season. Hometown
fans proved to have an affect as four home-
stands have produced three* victories including
the first place trophy at the Rams Cowtown
Tournament.
