(Political Adv.)
During sixteen years in the
grian business Wm. Daugherty
Jr. has seen that business
change for him from a one truck
operation to one that now uses
both truck and rail facilities and
(provides elevator storage for
368600 bushels of grain in
three separate warehouses. Op-
erations during the grain season
inchid& Bartlett Taylor and the
'Corpus Christi area.
During part of his time in the
grain business since 1936 he op-
erated with a partner but most
of the time his has been an in-
dividual business.
It was in the spring of 1950
that he built his first elevator
for the storage of government
loan grain. This is the large ele-
vator on- the M.K.&T. trades
north of the business section It
has a capacity of 285000 bush-
els with convenient facilities for
both rail and truck transporta-
tion. In the spring of this year he
purchased the Taylor Pecan
Company properties in Taylor
and changed them into a grain
storage elevator where he ac-
cepts grain for government loan
storage buys grain and sells
feeds. The capacity of this ele-
vator is 62000 bushels. In recent
weeks he has completed con-
struction of another storage ele-
vator in Bartlett. This one. with
a capacity of 21.600 bushels is
located on the M.K.&T. tracks
south of the business section. It
is located in Williamson Countv
while the other one is in Bell
County.
In the handling of gbvern-
ment loan grain he operates as
the Daugherty Grain Company.
For buying and shipping grain
on the open market he ODerates
as the B. & G. Grain Co. The
initials B. and G. come from the
first names of his two sons
Billy and Gerry who are already
learning the grain business
from their father and working
with him whenever possible.
Another addition this year is
a hammermill which is operated
primarily for the company.
The first truck he drove him-
self doing his own buying sell-
ting and hauling. Today he has
eleven assistants in the opera-
tion of the business during the
i grain season not including the
I three trucks operated by the
business others hired during
the busy season nor the person-
nel handling the rail transporta-
tion. In the Bartlett plant are

Christi area operations each

Perhaps William Inherited
some of his interest in the grain
business because his father
William Daugherty Sr. also
bought and shipped grain here
in his younger days. This was
not his full-time occupation as it
is with his son however because
he also operated the local cotton
yard and spent some time farm
ing.
He was farming in the Pecan
Community when William was
born in 1914. The family moved
to Bartlett in 1919 and it has
been home since. He attended
the local .schools and worked
with his father farming and at
the cotton yard during the sum
mer and for awhile after school
days ibefore getting into the
grain business.
It was on December 9 1935
that he and Miss Claudia Cath-
erine Cowart the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Cowart of
Jarrell were married. Their
children ai"e two sons Billy
Cleveland 15 and who will be a
Sophomore in high school this
year and Gerald Lee (Gerry)
10 who will be in the sixth
grade this year.
The only time the family has
been away from home was dur-
ing the war and Bartlett was
still considered home then. He
took pilot training with the Air
Force Enlisted Reserve under
the Civil Aeronautics Admini-
stration but the" war got over
before he was called for active
service. He took primary flight
training at Schreiner Institute
Kerrville; secondary training at
Alamo Field San Antonio; ci-oss
country flying at Lou Foote
Field Dallas; and an instruct-
or's course at Randolph Field
San Antonio. He has a commer
cial pilots license.
His hobby is still flying. With
Mrs. Daugherty flowers and the
yard are perhaps the principal
hobby. She has taken great in-
terest in the work of the Parent-Teacher
Association.
The family are members of
the Methodist Church where hehrriautyltedCfflDtaler'
