H. T. Pope of the "Old Friend-
ship" community hns stored 200
tons of ensilage in two stacks
this year from 16 acres of grain
sorghums.
In storing this feed by this
method Mr. Pope constructed
wire pens of heavy netting (wire
out in the open and cut the he-
gari green with ensilage cutter
and placed it inside the wire pen.
While the feed was being cut
water was added and the mater-
ial was packed by tramping.
"My cattle eat every bite of
their 'feed when fed this way"
Mr. Pope stated. Mr. Pope uses
this ensilage in fattening his
cattle for market and carrying
his range cattle through the win-
ter. The above feed was stored
for an actual cash expense of
approximately $"42.50.
With the assistansce of the
Bartlett Camp Mr. Pope has
planned a complete erosion con-
trol program for his 121 acre
farm. Mr. Pope plans to retire
12 acres cultivated land to pas-
ture construct 2.2 miles of tre-
races and provide outlets proteo
tion for all terraces practice
contour cultivation and use ero
sion resisting crops on all of
his cultivated land.

Erosion control plans have
been worked out with 19 farm
owners by" the farm planners of
the Bartlett KJamp since July 1
1940. This represents 2650 ac-
res of land. Farms included in
this work are: J. M. Gilchrist
Henry Yeager Eddie Weise E.
L. Townsend all of the San Ga-
briel community; Guido Gers-
bach H. T. Pope and M. E. But-
terfield (two farms) of the Old
Friendship community; E. B.
Talley S. T. Johnson Mrs. F.
Dahlberg and The Allison Es-
tate all of Taylor; J. I. Bohac
and J. F. Bohac and Frank Skra-
hak of Granger ; W. H. Hartrick
Little River: Adolf E. Valenta
and G. J. Helms of Schwertner
and J. F. Messer and Mrs. E. L.
Scott of Bartlett.
Fifty enrollees spent one hour
recently studying the funda-
mentals in beef cattle produc-
tion on the Henry Yeager farm
near San Gabriel.
Mr. Buddy Yeager operator
of the farm and Mr. H. D. Kay
vocational agriculture teacher
of San Gabriel Texas discussed
with the boys in detail points to
consider in selecting beef breed-
ing animals and animals for
beef
Several registered animals
the Yeager herd of Hereford
cattle were used by Mr. Kay in
describing the desirable points
in such animals
Practical lessons on related
agricultural subjects like this
are given to the enrollees each
week. Farm enterprises of
sheep hogs dairy and beef cat-
tle farm crops soil conserva-
tion and the live-at-home pro-
gram are included in this scope
of instruction with the boys.
3 tons of native prairie hay
were recently harvested from
three acres of permanent mea-
dow buffer strips by Robert
Friedrich who owns and opera-
tes a 128.0 acre farm 5 miles
northwest of Bartlett.
With the assistance of the
Bartlett Soil Conservation CCC
Camp Mr. Friedrich laid these
meadow strips out on the con-
tour and xhe seed were planted
in March 1938. This is the first
year that a hay crop has been
harvested from these erosion re-
sisting strips. A small grain
crop planted prior to seeding to
bluestem grasses was harvested
in 1938 by Mr. Friedrich.
Under favorable conditions
another crop of excellent hay can
be expected this year. Addition-
