FIRE DESTROYS
GRANGER HOME
Granger Tex. Mar. 5. A fire
destroyed the home of Cliff An-
derson in the eastern part of the
city at 11 o'clock last night af-
ter Granger firemen had fought
earnestly to extinguish the fire.
Mr. Anderson and a son were
in the home at the time the fire
was discovered and a prized bull
dog was trapped under the house
and burned to death.

83-year-old merchant of this
city had a surgical operation at
the local hospital last night.
He was reported to be getting
along as well as could be ex-

OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Austin Mar. 8. Opening of
the Elgin State bank assuming
all the liability and deposits of
the Merchants and Farmers
bank there which closed Dec.
3 1926 Tueesday was announ-
ced by Charles 0. Austin state
banking commissioner.
Capital stock of the new bank
is 50000 ; John Barton is pres-
ident and Otto Salcher cashier.
Other members of the board of
directors are John Dyer presi-
dent of the Guaranty National
bank of Houston; George R.

Belton Mar. 9. Mrs. Emma
R. Harvey wife of the late W.
H. Harvey and resident of Bel-
ton since 1879 died suddenly
here this morning at 3:20
o'clock. She was apparently in
good health and retired last
night feeling all right. Soon
after midnight she became ill
and was rushed to the local hos-
pital but she failed to respond
to medical attention and soon
after life became extinct. Heart
trouble was attributed as cause
of death.
Mrs. Harevy was born in Pon-
tiac Mich. April 21 1849. She
and her husband moved to this
city forty-eight years ago from
Bryan where for several years
Mi. Harvey was district clerjc.
Mr. Harvey was also postmas-
ter of this city for a number of
years. He died on May 8 1915.
The deceased was a devoted
member of the Methodist church
and was active in church work.
There survive her four nieces
whom she reared. They are
Mrs. E. M. Davis of Memphis
Tenn. ; Mrs. Jesse Grimes of
Hamilton; Mrs. J. Wes Reed of
Honey Grove and Miss Cora M.
Harvey of Dallas.
Funeral services will be held
Friday morning at 10 o'clock at
the Methodist church conduct-
ed by Rev. M. D. Council.
MEN AND BOYS' REVIVAL
AT BAPTIST CHURCH
Great interest being mani-
fested at the Men and Boys' Re-
vival being conducted this week
at the baptist church. Many-
have walked the isle taking
their stand for Christ against
Satan and the world.
The church is crowded at
e(ach 'service although Uhe
weather has been disagreeable.
Mr. Clarence Hennington is
leading the music in a great
way being assisted at the piano
by Lloyd Pietzsch.who does his
part fine.
The preaching is being done
by Pastor Eskridge assisted by
all the men.
The meeting closes Friday
evening. You are wanted at

Taylor March 7. Constable
Sparks Kuykendall is in a local
hospital critically wounded as a
result of an attack made on him
by a negro late Sunday night on
the Noack road two miles south
east of here.
The negro fired two shots
point-blank at Kuykendall as the
latter walked toward the ne-
gro's car parked on the dai'k
roadside. One of the shots en-
tered Kuykendall's abdomen
while the other grazed his neck.
The shots were fired at such
close range that Kuykendall al-
so suffered powder iburns about
the face.
Following the shooting Kuy-
kendall who was unarmed got
into his car and drove to Taylor.
Kuykendall it was reported
told friends that he knows the
identity of his assailant but re-
fuses to make it public for fear
the negro will be lynched. The
constable plans to arrest the
man as soon as he leaves the
hospital his friends say.
Dr. G. A. Wedemeyer operat-
ed on Kuykendall today and ex-
tracted the bullet which lodged
in his abdomen. Unless compli-
cation set in Dr. Wedemey'er
said Kuykendall frvill recover.
BERTRAM FAIR DATES.
Bertram Mar. 5. The direc-
tors of the Burnet County Fair
Association met at Bertarm. and
set the date for holding the
Burnet county fair at Bertram
on July 27 28 and 29.
