Henry W. Grady to Voters
That brilliant dud eloquent South-
erner, Henry Wd Grady, cf Atlanta,
Ga., gave utterance to the foilowiug
words in one eff bis characteristic
speeches to a crowd of Southern
voters. It is argued by the liquor
interests that the saloon does! no
barm, that the temperance advo-
cates are mere cranks without good
sense. M p n, voters, listen to
Grady:
“My friends, hesitate beforo you
vote liquor back into Atlanta, now
that it is shut out. Don’t trust it.
It is powerful, aggressive and uni-
versal in its attacks. Tonight it
enters an humble home to ttrike the
roBc from a woman’s,cheek, and to-
morrow it challenges this republic
in the halls of congress. Today it.
strikes a crust from tho lips of a
starving child, and tomorrow it lev-
ies tribute from the government it-
self. There is no cottage lowly
enough to escape it, no place strong
enough to escape it—shut it outi It
defies the law when it can not co-
erce suffrage. It is flexible to ca-
jole, but merciless in victory. It is
the mortal enemy of peace and or-
der; the destroyer of man and the
terror of .woman; the cloud that
shadows the face of children; the
demon that has dug more graves
and sent more souls unshrined to
judgment than all the pestilences
that have wasted life since God
sent, the plague to Egypt or all the
wars that were waged since Joshua
stoqd before Jericho,
“Oh, my countrymen! loving God
aud humanity—do not bring this
grand old city again under the do-
main of that power. It can uplift
no industry, revive no interest,
remedy no wrong. You know that
it can not. It comes to destroy,
and it shall profit mainly by the
ruin of your sons, or mine. It
comes to mislead human souls and
to crush human hearts under its
rumbling wheels. It comes to bring
gray-haired mothers down in shame
and sorrow to their graves. It
comes to change the wife’s love into
despair and her pride into shame.
It comes to still the laughter of the
lips of little children. It comes to
stifle all the music of the home, and
fill it with discord and desolation.”

If You Never Start
You will Never get Anywhere
We have been telling you about San Jose and an investment in lots there for
some months now and it is about time you were deciding on buying a lot for $300 on
monthly payments of $10.
When we first started this advertising we had nothing at San Jose but a pasture
and a Hot Sulphur Well. Now we have buildings of every kind business houses, hotels
and cement sidewalks and other improvements. Our electric line is about completed in
to San Jose now and all lots are certain to advance in price.
Wont you write to us and ask for printed matter
and specific information?

The report shows an increase
since the first report of the season
of 4,100, the Eastern Belt, by rea-
son of the splendid rains that have
fallen on the other side of the Miss-
issippi recently making the best
showiug. Texas was accredited
with a loss of 3 per cent, notwith-
standing strong arguments that
havesbeen advanced of late in effect
that the crop in this state not only
has held its own in the face of
rather drouthy weather, but had
scored advancement, The situation,
as it now presents itself, since the
announcement of the bureau report,
is accentuated by the old truism
that July and August are the most
trying mouths of all and that unless
the Western belt enjoys liberal pre-
cipitation right soon the deteriora-
tion is due to be more rapid.
In the produce market a great
demand for fruits obtains, on ac-
count of the hot weather. The or-
ange, banana and lemon trade is
actiye, while California fruit is be-
ing handled extensively. Water-
melons have struck a snag, although
cantaloupes seem to be well absorb-
ed despite the heayy supply.
Marked improvement fs being
shown in the poultry market, Hens
are topping $5, the highest in sev-
eral weeks. »Large fryers are in
demand. Eggs are in bad, only
cold storage supplying the trade,
The potato market continues firm
with prices at $1.00 and $1.75 per
bushel.
The rice market is showing par-
ticular freedom because of the re-
moval of nearly all of last year’s
stocks. Clean rice shows an easy
tone. Every indication favors a
large crop.
Houston bank clearings for the
week were $21,729,245.
At the shooting contest in Palacios
on the 4t,li Collegeportmen carried off
the honors. Out of 25 shots Robert
L. Price made 21 the best for the day
ahd J. W. Maples came second with
19 being a tie with Palacios best. shot.
Our men for various reasons failed to
take their guns while D. H. Morris,
