THE BEGINNING OF THE END
With the resignation of Rabbi Irving F. Reichert from the
ill-famed American Council for Judaism we can clearly view a
turning point in the history of that organization.
Rabbi Reichert knew of and resented the political intrigues
of the Council.
He was one of the founders and, for the last few years, one
of the, main lecturers and organizers for the group.
Rabbi Reichert referred to the status of the Council today as
“virtually a pariah in Jewish life.” And he should know at
first hand.
“Pariah” means outcast. One that is despised by the rest of
society.
Rabbi Reichert’s decision to resign from and to denounce
the Council for what it is deserves great praise.
He hit the nail on the head.
His step marked the beginning of the end of the American
Council for Judaism.
“NOT GOOD-BYE, JUST SO LONG”
One of the saddest chores between friends is the moment of
parting, the last good-bye.
Wednesday night at Temple Beth-El in Fort Worth was one
of thewe moments.
Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum and his wife were the guests of
honor. Rabbi Rosenbaum is on his way to a new pulpit in De-
troit. «
Rabbi Rosenbaum is truly a great Rabbi. He has the deep
sense of humility which is his mark of distinction.
He invested his time with the duties of being a Rabbi. He
visited the sick, performed at the weddings, and one could
catch a tear in his eyes as he sympathized with the mourners
at funerals.
Rabbi Rosenbaum likes to “live” with and for his congrega-
tion. He was able to dscuss film exposures with the camera en-
thusiasts, philosophy or music ; and he was eager to join the kids
in a merry-go-round ride in the park.
As we all know, Teacher Rosenbaum never shunned the duty
of his conscience when he believed it was right to discuss pea>
tinent issues. He was ready to sound the clarion call of right-
eousness Jo his congregants on vital topics. He was never cha-
grinn^d at the lack of overflowing numbers at services. “I’m not
just a Rosh Hashonah Rabbi,” he once said. “We hold services
every Friday night.”
How true.
Rabbi Rosenbaum well knows, taught and preached that a
good Jew has to have compassion for his fellowman, identifi-
cation with his fellow Jews. These values have to be translated
into action.
Detroit might well be proud that the Rosenbaums are head-
ed “thataway.”
Fort Worth, the “thisaway” of the Rosenbaums seven years
stay, will more than miss their true friendship.
Th% warm clasp, the many sweet memories.
Not good-bye.
Just So-long. ' 1 1

Reichert held for the American
Council for Judaism came when
that organization had the au-
dacity to ask that the United
States Government investigate
the United Jewish Appeal. This
Rabbi Reichert could not digest.
This he had to protest vehemently
as being anti-Jewish. This he did.
WE HAVE IT that, if he could
do it without great loss of face,
Mr. Rosenwald would also with-
draw his support from the Coun-
cil.
Loss of face should not be in-
volved here. We all make mis-
takes. We would suggest to the
Rosenwalds and all others who
honestly shared the positive, con-
structive views of the Council
that they follow Rabbi Reichert’s
lead and resign immediately.
THERE IS NO place for an or-
ganization like the Council on the
scene of America today.
The Council is composed of a
good deal of fellow' travellers,
noch-shleppers, who want to
cover-up their Jewishness. They
think the best way is by painting
their organization with a sugar
coated veneer of super-patriot-
ism. They want to represent
themselves as a sort of “white
Jew”—an in-group — a special
kind of aristocrat.
This is false. This is against the
concepts of good government and
go«d citizenship. We all^know that
the best way to be a good citizen
is to be a good Jew or a good
Christian.
We are indeed happy that there
are only 27 Council members in
Fort Worth and not too many
mora proportionately in Dallas
wbifc^ is a regional headquarters.
WE FURTHER believe that
many of these people honestly
held their opinions for what they
thought was beneficial to all Jew-
ry. Others figured that by joining
the Council they had good reason
not to contribute to Jewish char-
ities, philanthropies and commun-
ity drives.
JEWISHNESS can be summed
up briefly as having a heart, do-
ing unto others, as one would have
others do unto us, giving the
other man a break.
The preponderant majority of
American and world Jews
thought the best way to demon-
strate this was through the rescue
and rehabilitation of persecuted
Jewry. For this they gave their
money, their time and their
hearts.
This the Council was against
and showed its greatest antagon-
ism when it recently asked the
United States Government to in-
vestigate the United Jewish Ap-
peal.
We are overjoyed to see that
Rabbi Reichert has resigned from
these dangerous opinions and has
severed his relations with the
Council.
We respectfully urge other
Council members to do likewise.

Plain Talk

OF RUBBING ME OUT:
THE LATE REV. DR. H. H. MACARTIIUR IS SPEAKING very
well of us in his pamphlet recently published and widely distributed.
(To me have come some dozen copies of it).
The pamphlet’s title: “Why You Can’t Rub Out The Jews,” mean-
ing you and me, of course. Dr. MacArthur feels we never can be
rubbed out and there are all those millenia of our history to back
him up.
Says he: “Jealous as we may feel,, the fact is that most of us are
greatly indebted to Jews. . . The number of Jews receiving Nobel
prizes is very large, indicating great achievement in science and
other worthy causes for the blessing of humanity.
He names a long list of Nobelmen . . . Einstein, Ehrlich and War-

so much to do with wresting immeasurable power out of uranium.

Energy Commission). . . . And the Jews Widall and Weill who had
to do with putting down Typhus as one of the plagues; and Freud j
who by aid of new lights searched out the human psyche . . . and
