Amy Swaner saluted at Gold Card event
Her loyalty, service to school district cited
Wylie Independent School
District’s community educa-
tion department recently
honored Gold Card Club
members with a luncheon at
Wylie Middle School.
The Gold Card Club is an
organization for Wylie ISD
citizens 65 years of age or
older and is designed to thank
citizens for the support they
have given the schools and
students in the past and for
t f^iiLipport they continue to
ohW
Members are allowed free
admission to school ac-
tivities, including home
athletic events, drama pro-
ductions, etc. In addition,
Gold Card holders are given a
50 percent discount on com-
munity education class fees.
At this year’s annual spring
event, special recognition was
given to club member Amy
Swaner in appreciation for
her friendship, loyalty, and
service to the schools and
community.
Amy was born in 1908 to
Wiii and Eliza Parker Lokey
in the area now covered by
Lake Lavon, where farming
was the major industry. Since
there were no boys in the
Ixrkey family, it was not
unusual for Amy, the eldest
of four daughters, to help her
father in the fields when she
became older. Amy’s sisters
were Nannie Bell (Campbell),
Lottie (Housewright), and
Sue (Seabourne).
It was while Amy was help-
ing her father that a young
farmer, Asa Swaner, began
“making eyes" at her. In
1925, Asa and Amy were
married, and to the couple
were born five children -
Edith, Billy Jack,.. Charles,
Wayne and Glen. All the
children were raised on the
farm with love, except Glen.
According to Amy, he was
raised “in town" with love.
After Asa became a sheet
metal worker, the family
moved from the farm. He
first worked at Intercontinen-
tal, and the last 16 years of
his life were spent at LTV. In
1966, Amy lost Asa in a
tragic train accident.
Amy has one grand-
daughter, Susan, who cur-
rently lives in Saudi Arabia.
The rest of her 20-plus grand-
children are “Swaner boys”.
Three years ago, a great-
granddaughter was bom and
given the name Amy, after
Miss Amy. Since that time
two more great-
granddaughters have been
born.
For many years, Miss Amy
has had the reputation for be-
ing one of the best (and most
difficult to book!) babysitters
in Wylie. A lady with an ob-
vious and overwhelming love
for children, Miss Amy has
loved and nurtured not only
her own, but also many other
Wylie children.
She cared for them as in-
fants, watched them
graduate from high school
and college and now knows
them as adults. An active
member of the First Baptist
Church, she is known as the
"sunshine girl" in her Sunday
school class, the T.E.L.
In presenting the recogni-
tion award, public informa-
tion and community educa-
tion director Betty Stephens
said, “1 met Amy Swaner
