Whoever commits sin is a skive of sin".
(John 8:34)
We are hearing a lot these days about addictions. Psychologists seem to
labeling more and more behaviors as addictive. There are alcohol addictions,
drug addictions, pornography addictions, co-dependent addictions, food
addictions, and on and on it goes What we don’t hear so much about is the
ultimate addiction: the grandaddy of all addictions which leads to every other
form of addiction . the SIN addiction.
Jesus tells us. and the Bible affirms this throughout its various books, that sin
is addictive. Once one engages in a lifestyle of disobedience to the laws of God.
he becomes more than merely a rebel; he becomes a victim well. He so
entangles himself in the cords of his own sin that he finds it impossible to
escape merely by the strength of his own w ill and resolutions. Sin becomes a a
harsh and cruel taskmaster, demanding greater and greater service, and
ultimately resulting in death and hell The good news of the Scriptures is that
Jesus came to set us free from the grip of sin. and w hum the Son sets free is free
indeed. Those who attempt to tackle the problem of sin in their own strength
are doomed to failure, but those who look to the Sasior will find that His grace
is sufficient.

THIS BOY’S LIFE
It’s hard to go wrong with a
movie that has Robert
DeNiro in it. This Boy’s Life
is no masterpiece in filmmak-
ing, but it supports my
DeNiro premise.
This is the true story of
Syracuse University pro-'
fessor Tobias Wolff’s adven-
tures through his teenage
years. Relative newcomer
Leonardo DiCaprio is ex-
cellent in his portrayal of the
sometime juvenile delin-
quent. It tells of young
Tobias and his divorced
mother, played by Ellen
Barkin, whose cross-country
travel take .them to Seattle.
His mother, Caroline, meets
and eventually marries an ap-
parently wimpish and sweet
man named Dwight, played
masterfully by Robert
DeNiro. When Toby is sent to
the small town of Concrete to
live *with his future step-
father, Dwight changes into a
strict, often violent
disciplinarian determined to
make his new son into a well-
behaved boy.
Knowing this is a true story
makes it better, but the en-
ding still seems somewhat
abrupt and uncreative. Set in
the 1950's, the music is one of
the best parts of the film. It’s
hard to miss with songs like
"Summertime Blues", “Bye
Bye Love", and "Blue Mon-
day". It is rated R for
language and sexual content
and opened April 23rd.
