Homecoming weekend at Howard
Payne is a time for friends, fun and fel-
lowship. But what about the athletes,
who have games scattered throughout
the weekend?
HPU will host soccer, volleyball and
football games throughout the Home-
coming weekend.
"I'm really excited about volleyball
hosting a (conference) pod tournament
this year during homecoming," said
Tate Sullivan, a sophomore defensive
specialist.
HPU will play twice Saturday in the
American Southwest Conference pod
tournament in Brownwood Coliseum.
The Lady Jackets will face Hardin-
Simmons at 11 a.m. and UT Dallas at
3 p.m.
"Home games are a great chance for
Jacket Nation to support each other,"
Sullivan said. "I'm very excited for all
of the athletes participating in Home-
coming week this week. Whether it's
volleyball, football or soccer, it's awe-
some that we get the chance to repre-
sent HPU during this special week."
The HPU football team, which has
won back-to-back games for the first
time since 2009, is hosting Louisiana
College at 2 p.m. at Gordon Wood Sta-
dium. Some players say they are focus-
ing more on their conference-opening
game than it being Homecoming.
"It's our opening game in confer-
ence, and we are just focusing on the
game plan and beating Louisiana Col-
lege - not so much Homecoming," said
freshman quarterback Richard Young.
But Young added, "Having a lot of
fans in the stands screaming and yell-
ing makes a better environment, and I
think we'll thrive on that."
Sophomore defensive back Xavier
McFalls said, "There is no added pres-
sure but just to play and give all glory
to God. I'm going to be nervous, but
we prepare and practice hare during
the week to get ready for the game.
"The more fans that come out to the
game, the more support we have which
helps us out."
Senior safety and punter Josh Epler
said, "I understand that everything fellIt-I I U y) I1fLET VIRJII
The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets, shown here during a strategy session against Trinity earlier this
season, will seek to extend their momentum in the Homecoming football game Saturday against Loui-
iana Colleae.into place in the previous game, so I
am just going to keep on playing the
way I have been playing for Home-
coming and we'll see what happens."
Other players are motivated because
it's Homecoming and they know more
fans and alumni will attend the game.
"Homecoming makes me want to
perform better. I want to show them
that HPU football is on the rise and we
are here to stay and we are playing well
as a team," sophomore tackle Marcus
Muldrow said.
Senior tight end Jeremy Masterson
said, "I hope we win and we play to
are full potential in front of the crowd."
Senior soccer player Jamie Tish
loves the larger crowdsfor Homecom-
ing matches.
"I think it's an amazing experience
because all of the girls I have played
with in the past, and all the girls who
helped build the program, along with
the current players, are able to be to-
gether in one place," Tish said.
"I just love getting to see everyone
and it helps me get even more pumped
for the game."CO 2i1g Vo14nfrds
