So, now that the elections are right
around the corner and everyone is in his
or her quadrennial state of political fer-
vor, I figured I might as well join in.
However, I'm not going to endorse a
candidate. I'm not going to take a stand
on the issues, and I'm not going to try
to engage your patriotic enthusiasm. I'd
like to present a bit of a different out-
look on the whole situation, and I hope
it might stir a thought or two that will be
worth your while.

that matter, why is it important?
I'm not asking to be facetious or irrev-
erent; I'm looking for genuine consider-
ation of the question. It's always inter-
esting if you really think about this sort
of thing. Questions like these always
seem especially important when the time
comes to choose our leaders and, pre-
sumably, the course our nation will take.
And while we're asking, what evenmakes a country? People? Policy? Bor-
ders?
There have been quite a number of em-
pires, nations, organizations, and politi-
cal entities throughout history. Thus far,
none of them have been utopia, none of
them have solved all the problems, and
all of them have eventually withered
away.
So what makes us think that America
is somehow different, somehow special?
Do we assume that is truly up to us to se-
lect a candidate who will "save" us from
the impending catastrophe and "restore"
the country to its former "perfection?"
Yet every election - and in between them
- everyone seems to pick a side and feel

a fireworks show at Don
Shepard Park Oct. 12.
This was the first year for
the fireworks to be held.
