Monsignor Stanley Francis
Louis “Father Stanley ’’Croc-
chiola, noted historian and former
parish priest for the Diocese of
Amarillo and the Archdiocese of
Santa Fe, New Mexico, died Mon-
day, February 5,1996 at age 87.
Born in Spring Valley, N.Y. of
Italian immigrants, Monsignor
Crocchiola attended St. John’s
University in New York City and
Catholic University in Washing-
ton, D.C. Ordained in 1938 he was
assigned a teaching position at St.
John’s University. Health con-
cerns caused him to seek work in
a drier climate and he was sent to
the Texas Panhandle. After a brief
assignment in Hereford at St. An-
thony’s Church, Stanley became
the pastor at St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church in Lubbock.
He was called briefly back to
New York and North Carolina be-
fore returning to a parish in Taos,
New Mexico, where he would
serve eleven and a hall years
within the Santa Fe Archdiocese.
In 1952, named diocese histo-
rian. Father Stanley moved to the
Texas Panhandle where he
helped pen the seventh volume of

published by the Knights of Co-
lumbus Historical Commission.
Parishes in Canadian, Rotan,
Spur, White Deer, Dumas, St.
Francis, and Pep were under his
direction.
Stanley was named parish
priest of the Holy Family Catholic
Church in Nazareth in 1969 and
would remain there until his re-
tirement in 1984.
Under the pen name of F.
Stanley, over 190 works about the
lore and legends of the Southwest
were published. Rodeo Days
about Canadian and Hemphill
County was his first historical ac-
count, printed in 1953. Other
works include The Texas Pan-
handle: From Cattlemen to
Feedlots, Early Days of the Oil
Industry in the Texas Panhan-
dle, Fort Bascom: Comanche-
Kiowa Barrier and
Railroads of the Texas Pan-
handle. Historical pamphlets
from almost every town and com-
munity in the Texas Panhandle
and eastern New Mexico were
published.
Survivors include a brother,
Peter Crocchiola of Brooklyn,
N.Y.; and two sisters, Anne Rossi
of Trenton, N.J, and Sue Fer-
geson of Los Angeles.
Vigil services were held 7 p.m.
Wednesday in Sacred Heart
Catholic Church at Canadian.
Rev. John Valdez, pastor of Our
Lady of Guadalupe Catholic
Church in Amarillo, officiated.
Funeral services were held this
morning in Holy Family Catholic
Church, Nazareth. Bishop Leroy
T. Matthiesen and Rev. Darryl
Birkenfeld officiated.
The family suggest memorials
be to St. Anthony’s Hospice, 200
NW 7th, Amarillo, or St Joseph’s
Retirement Center in Panhandle.
