Yesterday afternoon two men left
tho city for the purpose of obtain-
ing work on the R. It. it R. G.
When about two rnilon from the city
they wero mot in tho woods by three
men, armed with revolvers, who or-
dered them to deliver up their mon-
ey. They lmd no monoy, but a va-
lise carried by one of them was ta-
ken by tlie liigbwuj nion. A short
distance from where tho men were
halted, three horses wero tied,which
undoubtedly belonged to tho high-
waymen.
A family wagon, which was built
in tho year 1820 in tho state of Ohio
passed through tho city yesterday
evening, containing a man, wife and
two children. Tho owner, Ueorge
Lake, informed a Herald reporter
that the wagon has been in his pos-
session twenty-fivo years and has
only been repaired twice during the
time. Mr. Lake lias purchased land
near Gollinsuilie and will engage in
tanning. He has been engaged in

rive here to-morrow about 1 o’clock.

Atout 3 o’clock tins morning a
firo broke out in the rear of the St.
Charles hotel, near and just north
of the Union depot and in half an
hour the building was totally des-
troyed. Tho fire originated in tho
coni house. Tho building was own-
ed by Peter Fay and valued lit $5,-
000 on which lie lmd $3,000 insur-
ance. The furniture wus owned by
Radigan, lessee of the building and
is nearly a total loss. It was valued
at $3,000 and covered by $2,000.
The saloon fixtures owned by Peter
Fay were nil saved but about $500
worth of liquors were destroyed.
No insurance.
Tho Shormnu house, owned by
Win. Blackburne, thirty foot wost
caught tire from tlie 8t. Charles and
burned to the ground in a very
short timo. Yury little furnituro
was saved. Tho house and furni-
ture wero valued at $1,000.
Tho St. Charles was completed
only a few months since nnd was a
large and well-furnished houso.
A brisk breozo prevailed during
tlie firo but tho prompt and efficient
work prevented the spread of ilie
