DENISON,
FRIDAY...........MARCH 14, 1873.
Paragraph*.
Dr. Cutler ot the Journal, has returned
from Austin.
A plank sidewalk isbeing put down from
the Alamo House to the Depot.
Johnnie Morris and Joe Shearer have
been divorced, and Joe is now paddling the
El Progresso Restaurant soltaire.
J. F. Leggett, of Kansas, Senator Cald-
well's right bower, was in the city a few
days since.
The alarm of fire Tuesday night was
caused by a lady thoughtlessly leaving a
candle burning on a rafter, at the house
ofCapt. J. Sutherland, on Austin avenne,
and going to sleep. The flames* burst
though the roof, but were soon extin-
guished by the prompt action of kind and
wide-awake neighbors, to all of whom
Capt. S. returns many thanks.
■ J. M. Sheeder & Co., are just opening
the largest stock of Saddles, Bridles,

Main street, has a farm one mile from the
depot, with good houses, stables, fences,
springs orchards etc., which he desires to
rent.
Two cases were brought before Esquire
Shackleford yesterday, the charges being
carrying six-shooters. The men paid the
fine of $25 each and costs, and went on
their way sad, but considerably wiser than
before.
We have received the first number of
the Ottawa (Kans.) Daily News, a neat
paper of 12 columns. The citizens are no
doubt proud of the infant, as they should
be, and should nurse it with green-
backs until it grows to full stature, and
they'll do it if they are worthy to have a
local paper at all.
Dr. Difllc has purchased the Drug store
recently owned by Dr. Johnson, on Main
street. Mr. Henry Riley, who has been
connected with the store as prescription

garden on Dumas addition, next Sunday.
These gentlemen propose to fit up a cosy
1 place, where gentlemen may sip their beer
* or wine in peace and .quiet. No drunken-
ness or disturbance of any kind will be
tolerated. Hacks will run to and from the
grounds at reasonable rates.

An Absurdity,
The fastest moving thing, perhaps, on
the face of this earth, is the shot out of the
36-ton gun. It flies 500 yards in a second
of time ! But the earth is said to fly nine-
teen miles in that time: or over 33,000
yards. This is more than sixty-six times
as last as the shot flies from the gun ! Can
any human being conceive this rapid mo-
tion ? The earth ' and all her moutains,
seas, rivers, trees, and cities are hurled
Along at this terrific ratel Of course the
gasses of the atmosphere feel it not—are
not disturbed by this wondrous motion!
It is false, in every way; being nothing but
a sheer and monstrous Absurditv! See the
