HOIDLNG BACK FOODS.
Congress had N-eu in session only a
few daya when discussion began on
the-Eiod jrfice problem.
It was diarged In ' the House that
there are J00.000,000 cans of beef and
50:0001100 rtuts of bacon being held In
(he surplus stbeks of tin* army, which
ard not living released thim storage,
on the ground that to let them out
would cause n glut of food products.
•It . is wise to bear tvptli hides of a
story before making tip one's mind.
It is possible that the government
feels It must have this reserve of food
to protect the army against any pos-
sible renewal of fronble In Germnny.
HtHI that is not a serious risk. Ger-
many is down and out.
As far ns a glut of meats goes, the
American people would just like to see
it for a little while. Altliough natural-
ly a meat eating people, they have
been denying themselves tneat for
years. If for a litlef period there should
lie a larger supply available than Is ab-
solutely needed, the people would
make very good use of It. They would
throng the butchers' shops as of old.
Great would be the rejoicing over
roasts and steaka at many ft humble,
table that lifts scarcely known them for
the past font years. A larger meat
diet for a time would do people good,
and help build np working power,
which toilst hare declined a little
through the period of war abstinence.
There Is now a disposition to let the
canned meats and other foods go on
the market and the Secretary of war
Is favoring the sa,me.

Washington. June 19.—Doom of the ,
daylight saving, inaugurated as a war
measure, lias been prououueed liy .
Congress, both Senate and House
adopting by overwhelming votes mens- j
(ires to terminate operation of the law j
when Uie period of summer time cuds
next Octoiier 20.
The House, following three hours j
debate, by n vote of 233 to 132 passed
a bill to repeal tlie law on the 1st !
Sunday in next October but rejected
an amendment to make tbe repeal ef-
fective at once.
Tlie Senate by a vote of 56 to6, after
brief discussion added a rider to the
agricultural appropriation 1*111 provid-
ing for repeal of daylight measure on
the same date fixed by the House bill.
Tlie Senate measure now goes to con-
ference with tlie agricultural bill and
tlie House bill Is to be sent to the
Senate. It is considered likely that
Senate amendments will lie finally sub-
stituted for the House measure.
Members of laith Senate and House
in advocating repeal of the law enacted
March 19, Hits, said they were guided
largely by wishes of farmers and la-
boring men who oppose the advanced
working hours during the spring and
summer season. Opponents of the re-
peal legislation declared the extra
hour <if daylight was a l««>n to the city
dwellers ami asserted that others eas-
ily could adjust their affairs to con-
form to the advanced clock schedule.
Senate discussion was eouflned vtr-
tttally to addresses by Senator La Col-
lette, (Hep.), of Wisconsin, champion i
of the repeal rider, and Senator Cal- I
der, (Hep ), of New York, author of j
the daylight iaw. The six Senators,
who voted against the rider were:
Calder. Frelluglinysen. Newberry,
Page, Phipps and Robinson, all lto-
pnhlicans except Senator lteliinsoti.
However, the early boom doesn’t al-
ways catch the nomination.
