WASHINGTON
answered a WANT AD
One hundred and forty-three years ago a classi-
fied advertisement appeared in the New York Daily
Advertiser offering choice American woolens for
sale. In wording and general make-up it shared a
family resemblance with other classified advertise-
ments of the day and time. Yet it brought what may
well be regarded as the most famous "result" in want
ad history an order from George Washington for
enough material to make a "suit of clothes" for him-
self and a riding habit for Mrs. Washington.
Thrifty folks who read the Breckenridge Ameri-
can ads today will be pleased to learn they are follow-
ing such a distinguished precedent. Washington's
example is dramatic confirmation of their belief that
ad reading is a sensible paying habit for anyone in
any Station in life.
The far-seeing eye that trapped the British at
Yorktown and freed a nation did not scorn the hum-
ble want ad. It appealed to the qualities in Washing-
ton that brought him to his country's helm in time of
stress and won for him undying affection in the
hearts of his countrymen the qualities of thrift and
sound practical business judgment.
Do you read the ads regularly? It is one of the
most practical and beneficial habits you can culti-
vate particularly at this time when real need exists
for making every dollar yield the maximum in buy-
ing power. Read the ads in the American every day.
You will find it a rich and fruitful source of money-
saving information with substantial rewards for all
who read carefully.
