High school senior Silvia
Segura was notified this week
that she has been named a
finalist in the National Yourth
Writing Competition. The
competition, sponsored by
the Interlochen Arts Aca-
demy of Interlochen, Michi-
gan, garnered some 7,600
entires in short story and
poetry.
Silvia's entry, entitled “Thir-
teen,” deals with the
misadventures of a gawky,
oversized thirteen-year-old
boy. She wrote it last spring
as part of a short story unit in
her junior APE English class.
The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Santiago Segura, Silvia
is currently serving as
treasurer of the National
,Honor Society and secretary
of the Office Education
Association. Last year she
appeared as the lovely,
catatonic Queen Isabella in
the UIL one-act play
“Chamber Music,” by Ar-
thur Kopit, as well as being
chosen as one of Wylie’s
entries in the UIL ready
writing competition, After
school Silvia works as the
receptionist-cashier at the
Wylie Clinic. Following
graduation this spring, she
plans to attend Richland
College.
Five winners and twenty
finalists were named in each
category of the contest. As a
finalist, Silvia will receive a
copy of the Interlochen
Review, a compilation of all
the winning entries. Other
students entering from Wylie
were Doreen Waldo in short
story and Lisa Morgan in
poetry.
A second city-wide singing
has been scheduled for
Wednesday, February 20,
1980 at 7:30 p.m. at the First
Baptist Church. Every church
in the community has been
requested to provide a couple
of specials for the evening.
The special may be solos,
ensembles, choirs or instru-
mentalists.
If you would like to
participate, by providing a
special, please contact your
pastor by Sunday, February

favorable. May your plans for
the 20th include fellowship
with fellow Christians of our
community.

A Too Tight Fit
By: Michele Ryan
Abby LeCocq was naturally
nervous as she sat in line
waiting to take her driving
test.
In front of her was a man in a
large truck anxiously waiting
to take his commercial
driving test.
Abby could see that the truck
was not going to fit under the
canopy. Unfortunately, the
driver came to that realiza-
tion too late.
The testing officer looked up
in disgust and began letting
the air out of the truck’s tires
in order to get it out from
under the canopy.
The driver looked at Abby
and quipped, “This has been
a very deflating experience ”
