By H. ALLEN SMITH
United Press Book Editor
An English professor at New
York University his written a so-
ciological work called "Massacre:
A Survey oX Today's American In-
dian ' which deserves the attention
of every American past ndoles-
i ence. The book might well be sub-
titled "The 'Mother India" of Am-
erica" (Cipe & Smith).
Robert Ges'ncr came out of the
CntversUy of Michigan a few years
ngo with high honors In English
and the urge to write significant
literature. He- decided to collect In-
dian legends. He set out to gather
hl material nj the result Is "Ma-
sacre." But the legends are miss-
ing and there Is no poetry. Gcssner
was to overwhelmed by the plight
of the American aborigines that he
abandoned his poetic bent and
turned pamphleteer.
He traveled from tribe to tribe
from reservation to reservation. He
finds the Indians starving diseas-
ed and opprcijcd. The American
people he concludos. arc guilty of
colossal lnUktlcc. The book smacks
of a sincerity that Is almost holy
nd it must be taken nj a serious
work.
"The One Way Ride" I Double-

In ninny ways the best. The au-
thor Walter Noble Burns of "Billy

count of the Chicago mohi from
prohibition through the Llngle kill-
ing In a lucid swlft-reuding style.
His recital is eminently more read
able than most of the gangster fic-
tion. Burns Is n veteran Chicago

close touch with hit rubject since
the death of Big Jim Collslmo and
the development of bootlegging In-

Is a hodge-podge of biography au-

a plcntltude of what tho author is
pleased to call "amateur philoso-

books we have encountered in

are moments when Truln's literary
antics a pear cither kittenish or
maudlin. His own Puritan back-
ground scorns to have been fret-
ting him when he took up his pen
and he has made a noble effort
to prove that his ferbcarora were
realty quite passable human be-
