GOODBYE TO SUMMER
Yes goodbye to the good old sum-
mer time The thermometer has
crawled down to where life is once
more tolerablej and there will likely
be no return this season of the tor-
rid heat that has been so hard to en-
dure
The good old summer time has its
uses no doubt but we are already
now to welcome the fall and winter
with its cool bracing rejuvenating
weather It has been a long and un-
usually hot spell and we are worn
out with it
Yes goodbye to the good old sum-
mer time and may the next be more
gentle than the one that is slipping
away
BRYANS PLATFORM
Mr Bryan in Dallas yesterday laid
down the following planks as sound
democracy
First a platform is a pledge given
by the candidate to the voters and
when ratified at the polls becomes a
contract between the official and his
constituents To violate it in letter
or in spirit is not only undemocratic
but repugnant to the principles of rep-
resentative government and consti-
tutes an embezzlement of power
Second we denounce the despotism
known as Cannonism and favor such
an amendment of the rules of the na-
tional house of representatives as will
restore popular government in that
body and insure the rule of the ma-
jority on every question
Third we indorse the tariff plank
of the last national democratic plat-
form and believe that the measure
carrying out the promise of that plat-
form should among other things pro-
vide for free wool the aboltion of the

A Happy New Year to every Pales-
tine Jew and to the Jews of the world
At last the weather man has de-
cided to make an effort to get us
cooler weather
With cooler weather business is
bound to pick up How are you if
a merchant lining up to get the busi-
ness
Yep pay day was It little short this
time but everybody is getting along
and business is booming ahead with
everybody busy
The cool weather is great and if
we can get a good rain we will soon
be happy and forget all of our past
summer troubles
There is much building and im-
provement in contemplation for Pal-
estine and the old town is just going
to keep on growing
The fall turnip patches will be a
little late but they will be none the
less appreciated Always something
doing in East Texas
The millinery shows are on today
The jnen are not very conspicuous on
these occasions but they come
strong when the bills fall due
With the coming of cooler weather
every one will feel better and things
are bound to hum for this town is a
natural hummer and cant help it
It does not matter whether lovely
woman appears in a hat as broad as-
a barrel hoop or as high as a tele-
graph pole she always looks good to
us
The State Railroad has opened up a
vast new territory for our business-
men to exploit and there will prove
to be glory enough for all in its de-
velopment
It is asserted the street cars to be
operated in Marshall soon are to be
built in the Marshall shops Now
that is something like keeping Texas
money in Texas
The New York Times paid 25000
for cable tolls to get the Cook story of
the north pole and then Peary comes
along and wants to prove the story
was not worth the money
AVe are just wondering if this litt e
cold snap is further evidence offered
by Commodore Peary that he discov-
ered the north pole Peary should not
let any opportunity pass to claim the
earth
Pretty soon now the straw hat will
be laid away and the little blue or
black or grey theodore will adorn
the head of the nobles And the Doc-
tor Cooks and Aeroplanes will be ad-
ding to the glory of the women
When the East Texas press boys
are with us on the 24th and 25th of
this month they must be shown that
Palestine is just as good a town as
the Herald has been claiming it is
So let every patriotic citizen help
Austin people are rampant after a
visit from President Taft who has al-
ready announced that the Texas capi-
tal will not be included in his inten
erary The president is going to miss
seeing quite a number of good towns
but that is more his misfortune than
our trouble
The postoffice department has ruled

In boosting for a greater trade for
Palestine the merchants cannot af-
ford to overlook their greatest ally
the newspaper The newspaper goes
right to the homes of the people they
wish to interest in the matter and is
their cherished guest An ad in the
weekly edition of the Herald would
be read by the people of Anderson
and adjacent counties
Bryan laid dow n tMfgemocraticJaw
in Dallas yesterdayv a TO sees it7 and
it is now announced vthat Bailey will
tell his side in Houston early next
week Bryan and Bailey both claim
to be democrats and yet they are as
in far apart on the principles of govern
ment as any two men in the country
The question what is a democrat
has not been settled by a long shot
The Herald is truly glad the electric
light people are going to be given a
chance to show what they can do with
a real street light The small incan-
descent street lights have subjected
them to much unmerited criticism
These lights are as good as they were
purported to be but not near so good
as the gas lights hence the com-
plaints The new lights to be in-
stalled however are right up to now
and will demonstrate the fact that
the electric light people can illumi-
nate when given a chance
Mr Bryan is not so welcome to
Texas on this occasion by some of his
old friends as on former occasions
Theres Colonel Johnston of the
Houston Post for instance He has
always been an ardent Bryan booster
and never let the Nebraskan come to
the state without embracing him But
the Colonel is also a worse Bailey
man and thafbiings on embarrass
ment Bryan or Bailey one or the
other is doomed to lose many friends
during the present campaign
Pelagra has been discovered in sev-
eral of the southern states of late as
well as in the middle west There
are advanced theories as to what
causes the disease At first it was
thought the eating of old or mouldy
corn was responsible but many doc-
tors hoot at the idea They say it is
essentially a disease of poverty
where there is a lack of proper nour-
ishment About seventyfive per cent
of the cases observed piove fatal
The disease very closely resembles
lepiosy and has been classed as lep-
rosy by many The United States gov
ernment now has several cases at
Peoria 111 under observation in an
endeavor to ascertain just what
causes the disease and what will
prove a possible cure

Managers notice
A large and enthusiastic audience
witnessed the performance at the Air
dome last night Not having any show
on Monday night on account of the in-
clement weather the patrons of this
popular playhouse were eager to see-
the new vaudeville people and their
expectations were fully realized as
Mr Rogers and Miss Asidia are both
artists in their respective lines Mr
Rogers appeared in a monologue in
black face concluding with a coon
song that was well rendered and the
applause that came at its finish was
well deserved He was forced to re
spond to a number of encores
Miss Asidia the Japanese contor
tionist is a wonder Her contortions
and serpentine sinuosity are combined
in weird effects beyond description
Many of her feats last night brought
forth tremendous applause No one
should miss the opportunity of seeing
this ladys wonderful contortion work
duiing her stay in the city
