cannibals natives of the Sonth Sea
Islands of New Britain last October

Word of tho affair came to Ponapi
by ship from Now Britain Tho vice
governor of Ponapi related the circum-
stances to me There are forty Cath-
olic missionaries in New Britain and
these were tho ones who suffered
Fivo nuns and Qvo priests were sur-
rounded by a band of fierce tribesmen
near tho home of Dr Ilahl who is
governor of New Britain
The missionaries were killed with
knives and clubs Tho priests fought
for their lives but not ono escaped
After killing their victims the canni
bals proceeded to feast upon their
dead bodies It was not until the
tragic affair was over that tho flor
man authorities learned of its per-
petration
