One woman of 50 the mother
of several children and another
ft 19 who hover wore a corset
yere contestants in a beauty show
tbe latter having been selected to
represent Chicago out of the
wholenumber of applicants who
presented themselves before the
judges says the Houston Post
What has the average maid and
matron of the present day to say
of this Does it not smash a few
of their cherished traditions
The case of the elder of the
two women is perhaps not so re
ittiirkable she being a representa-
tive of a small number who by
rightliving and sensiblo conduct
generally remain contented happy
and beautiful long after most of
their sisters commence to fade
This 50yearold contestant gives
measurements of which Venus de
Milo of old might have been
proud and in explaining how she
retains the curves and bloom of
youth merely says that she takes
plenty of exerciso is careful about
Tier diet eating little meat and
that she always strives to avoid
worry and to bo cheerful and
happy I use nothing but soap

The devotees of rouge and
creams and all the other stuff that
helps to make many of the women
of our cities hideous might with
profit stud the methods of this
mother whose only complexion
treatment is plenty of fresh air
and exercise She has lived in
New York most of her life and
the fact that at an age when
most women arc old and wrinkled
her skin retains its youthful tints
and her body the graceful and
beautiful lines of girlood is de-
cided creditable to her and her
methods to say the least of it
And what praise shall be given
this Chicago girl who thojigh she
has never encased her form in
trujso torture machines called cor-
sets was selected as mostworthy
to represent the metropolis of the
Middle West in the Now York
contest of physical beauty
There are corsets and corsets
of course Some women wear
them sensibly whilo others insist
on lacing them so tightly as to
cause positive discomfort if not
pain and all because ot the mis
taken idea that an excessively
small waist is beautiful To show
that this girl has lost nothing by
eschewing them entirely here are
the measurements which won for
her the distinction she now cijjoys
Weight 137 pounds height 5
feet 3 12 inches chest normal 31
inches chest contracted 28 12
inches chest expanded 35 in-
dies bust 31 12 inches waist
21 12 inches hips 34 11 inches
thigh 22 inches calf 13 inches
hicepts 11 inches ankle 8 in-
ches forearm 8 12 inches wrist
5 12 inches
Of course it will be said that no
really modest woman would thus
exhibithorself an assertion which
obviously is more or lass true
Hut to point the moral of the ap-
plication of common sense meth-
ods to physical development the
case of this Chicago girl as well
as that of the New York woman

THE WOMAN BEAUTIFUL
CRITICISING THE BANNER
Our estimate of the peach crop
a few days since has been severely
criticised by a fe w growers who
assort that we have overestimated
the crop There are others how-
ever equally as well posted who
think we are about correct
It seems that in the last few
days possibly since the article
was written a great many trees
have been shedding their fruit
and that the loss from this cause
will be quite heavj This was
evidently caused by the frost of a
few weeks ago which chilled the
fruit leaving it in an unhealthy
condition It is a noticeable fact
that where trees have been well
cared for and are in a healthy
condition there is little trouble
The trees which have been neg
locted show the greatest loss
Possibly it will be best to revise
the estimate taking into consid-
eration changed conditions but
in any event we believe from the
present outlook there will be at
least 75 per cent of a crop which
will make the shipments greater
than they were two years ago
We realize the fact that it is
bad policy to overestimate the
crop and also to underestimate
it The people of the north who
are to consume our fruit want to
know the truth about the matter
and thatis just what wo will give
Ihcm If wo can ascertain it Last
year an attempt was made to con
vinco the consumers that the
tomato crop would be short and
a few weeks later the shipments
were heavier than ever before
known causing the people of the
north to think we were the big
gest liars on earth We dont
gain anything by misrepresenta
tions let us tell the truth as near
as we can ascertain it and the
results will take care of them-
selves Honesty is still the best
policy Jacksonville Banner
