A NECESSARY WORK
The Herald has said it so often that
It s eems useless to keep repeating
the same thing over and over But
it is a fact that must soak in on us
and on which we must get busy that
If Palestine is ever to be the prosper-
ous city we want it to be we home
people must get busy and add to Its
store house to its source of income
be dinner pall brigade Pal
lably aatedilandswe
j i 5i 3 p recfative but Cthere arelargeryana
better things in store for us If we will
get busy and live up to our oppor-
tunities We have idle land enough
in this county land that is not earn-
ing a dollar that if put to work
would make this city and county rich
And we have the people here who
have the means to buy up such lands
and settle them with a good class of
people Such an arrangement could
be made profitable to the promoters of
such a scheme could be made to
f work vast good to the community and
would be the means of helping some
good people get a good home on easy
terms We had as well accept the
truth that this city can never be per
manently prosperous until we get a
prosperous county population and we
Ehould get to work to secure this pop-
ulation The quickest way to accom-
plish this is to have a concrete propo-
sition to put up to a good class of
homeseekers who are looking toward
East Texas This work must natural-
ly fall on the local men who have tlie
money to handle such a proposition
and when they decide to thus work
for the good qf the community they
will find that they are working too
for their own best interests

Fires are occurring in the business
distiict with entirely too much regu-
larity and they are to be deplored
but there is consolation in knowing
that the town has the best fire com
pany in the state to fight such fires
In three recent fires in the center
of valuable business blocks and all
occurring at an hour when the town
was practically deserted except for
the night policemen the fire boys
have succeeded in keeping the flames
confined to the houses where the fire
originated Such work commends it-
self and the fire boys have the ap-

In the school election Saturday the
three trustees who stood for reelec-
tion were again chosen to help direct
the schools for the next year At the
last hour before the election some op-
position developed in the race but
thevote of the people has settled the
issue for another year and having
been chosen as trustees the men
holding such office should have the
undivided cooperation of the people in
the management and direction of the
public school matters The Herald is
sure that the schools of Palestine are
being well conducted in fact this
paper thinks marvels are being
wrought when it is taken into consid-
eration the amount of money available
for school purposes and there is every
reason to believe that the good work
will be kept up in the future The
truth of the matter is Palestine
schools should have more money and
be fetter equipped for good work And
until such time as this is possible we
as citizens and all of us should co
operate in every way possible to see
that our children get the best school
advantages possible
SWAT THE FLY
Swat the fly he is one of our most
deadly enemies Kill him screen
against him exterminate him Every
physician every scientist every ento-
mologist now tells us that the fly in-
stead of being the useful scavenger he
was once thought to be is one of our
mostdeadiy enemies He is responsi-
ble for very much of our sickness In
fact many doctors declare the fly is
almost the sole disseminator of ty
phoidand other feverproducing germs
And besides this grave danger the fly
is the filthiest bird known He
revelsin filth breeds in filth lives
The county candidates will soon be
swinging around the circle and then
the real joys of life will begin
Halieys comet is a real show now

ry day and yet it but re
cently came in to view Last Septem-
ber astronomers with their most deli-
cate instruments were searching lor
the reappearance of the comet and
true to prediction early in September
the faint outlines of the visitor were
detected on a delicate photographic
plate made of the heavens where the
comet should be And from day to
day these observations have been
taken Some three or four weeks ago
it became visible to the unaided eye
At first a faint globular dim star
then a faint tail was seen and now
the tail spreads out like a Damascan
sword across the heavens In all
these years its flight through space
has been timed and its reappearance
calculated to the minutest detail So
well had the astronomers learned the
ways of this occasional visitor that
Prof Max Wolf of Heidelberg Ger-
many knew to just what quarter of
the heavens to open his camera for
the long exposure of September 11
And when after hours of waiting he
again closed it and went Into his
dark loom and developed the plate
thus made among the stars on this
plate appealed a new speck no bigger
than the point of a needle And this
he heralded to the woild as the ex-
pected Halieys comet Wondeiful

On the lfltli of April the comet
passed perihelion nearest the sun
was going its swiftest 1S7S miles a
minute and determinedly rounding
the curve to push on toward the earth
as if to drive straight into our orb and
end all things for both bodies At
the same time the earth was coming
around its cmve in the opposite direc
tion and almost as eagerly rushing to
waid the comet its speed being about
1150 miles a minute And though
the two on the 19th of April were
still 95000000 miles apart the com
bined movement of earth and comet
has been steadily filling up the gieat
gap at the rate of fortythree miles
per second and the gieat events that
are to follow the middle of this month
are consequently at hand
That there will be no collision is as
evident as that an elevated train may
safely cross a surface road above or
a subway beneath When the comet
crossed the earths path early in
Match for it is even now within our
orbit it was 15000000 miles above
us and when it will pass out beyond
the same May 2G it will be 0000000
miles below us Professor W H Pick-

The Halley Comet Show Is as Much
the Great Wonder as Promised
Looms Big Now
As early as 330 a m Halieys
comet is now very conspicuous in the
eastern sky and nightly is growing to
be a fearsome fascinating celestial
show And it is well worth getting
up in the early morning hours to see
Soon however the big comet will
loom up in the western sky when and
where all can see it without the in-
convenience of early rising
The last appearance of this comet
was in 1835 and then its orbit was
outlined and its return to vision was
forecasted giving its schedule etc
Just thirtyseven years ago the celes-
tial giant turned in its flight and the
retreat that had taken an equal
amount 61 time ceased and its flight

ures a million or two may be clipped

brilliancy too of the comet will be
greatest on the 19th no less than
G9GG times what it was when discov-
ered by Professor Wolf
But the ISth of May is the great
day the day of the tiansit and the
day of the earths plunge through the
comets tail Nothing can transit the
i face of the moon unless it be a fleet
ing meteor for the moon is the near
est celestial body Only three bodies
can transit the face of the sun name-
ly the moon thus causing an eclipse
of the sun and the inner planets Mer-
cury and Venus The last transit of
Merucy occurred in November 1907
The last transit of Venus was observ-
ed December G 18S2 and the next
will be seen June 8 2004 this entire
century passing without that most in
teresting and significant phenom

Astronomers tell us that a few hours
later the earth will plunge through th
