four years
Mr Fay was visiblv affected by the
death of his secretary for whom he
bad a fond attachment We had left
Shreveport after having attended a
meeting of the directors of the Houston
ani Shreveport railroad about nine
oclock and Mr Echols then seemed tj
be in the best of health said tho rail-
road executive in discussing the death
of the young man All of the party
except Mr Radetzki and Mr Echols
went to the observation end of the car
leaving the two in the dining room
About 10 oclock Mr Echols told Mr
Radetzki that he was choking and
could not get his breath
Some one went ahead to find a phy-
sician and fortunately Dr E S Silber
nagel of Houston was in the Pullman
He did all in his power to save the dy-

gan local surgeon for the company at
Keachi the next station but to no
avail The physicians say that if they
had been within ten feet of Mr Echols
when he was stricken they could not
have saved him
All of the members of the party
went at once to Mr Echols but he
could say nothing I said to him
What is the matter old man but he
never spoke replying only by pointing
to bis throat
I was deeply attached to young

Will you allow me space to say a few
words through your columns to the
farmers and land holders through the
Bend As I have been riding round a
great deal lately prospecting for oil gas
and timber I find good timber fine in-
dications for oil and gas some fine
crops 1 find ten miles east of Jefferson
through that neck the best crops Best
indication for oil and gas I found after
I crossed bridge known as Harts bridge
I was with two inspectors and found on
W F Fasons farm the best average
crop of cotton and corn we saw on our
trip some fifteen or twenty acres of
good cotton for the time of year and
season about twenfy or twentyfive
acres more of fine corn I did not get
to see Mr Fason but we stopped at his
hous and got a drink of good water out
of one well and tried the other as these
men had been told of the difference in
his wells They say here is no doubt
there is oil there The writer is one of
Mr Fasons old chums it has been quite
a while since I have seen him I am
working near Lewis La have been in
the oil field about three years you peo
ple hold your land it wont be long till
there will be drilling done there for oil
for the vein from Caddo fields are com
ing in that direction Texas used to be
my home and I feel like it ought to be
now I like old Texas and always will
There are some ordinary crops In this
part of Louisianynot near like they are
in your county They are drownded
out through our country as it is low and
wet Will close with best wishes to all

A Delightful Occasion
If in the creation of man God4

have been only a little above that
of an animal The sonl in which
no feelings of joy or delight is felt
wl n listening to the strsins of

without love aud without the
appreciation of the gilt of God
wneu be givea to man the love ot
the goud the beautiful and last
butby no mpans least the love
of sweet music It i < a flowor gar-

In the worship of God if the
music is omitted the services are
bereft of a sweet and touching
solemnity more Godlike than an-
other portion of the service Be
tween this life and the one beyond
mutic seem to possess more pow-
er of conveying to the mind the
beauties ond happiness awaiting
the coming of the summons than
any picture man can portray It
is for this reason if none other
that man should love and appre-
ciate theone gift which exhilerates
without intoxicating and drives
away all cares of life without de-
bauching the other senseselevates
and purifies and is the connect-
ing link between this and that
higher and better life It is there-
fore essential that every child
should be able and quilified to the
fullest extent to understand music
and thii6 be better able to appre-
ciate this one great gift and ii
this way better appreciate the
beauties of life
Those who attended the entar
tunment given by the muical clafs
of Miss Ethel May Leaf on Tuesday
night last realized fully the pur-
port and meaning of the foregoing
Not one in the vast audience
could but feelin the touch of every
key the sound of every note there
was something higher than man
It is needless to say that the clasB
gave the strongest evidence possi-
ble of having been conscientiously
and thoroughly taught this was
evidencedby the performance of
each and that the effort of the fair
directress had not been iu vain
notwithstanding hers had been as
much a labor of love as a labor for
gain There is a confidence and
a love which is very apparent
existing between the teacher and
the pupils which is both beautiful
and touching Each and evry enter-
tainment given by Miss Ethels
mnsic class is looked forward to
with the greatest delight in antici-
pation of the high grade entertain-
ment which is always presented
In all the arrangements and beaut
lifying the hall nothing was omit-
ted
The piano used was a new one
of the Henry F Miller make which
Miss Ethel purchased for the oc-
casion The sweetness of tone was
marked and highly appreciated by
the audience The floral offerings
were in great profusion and very
beautiful The pupils vied with
each other in performing the part
assigned each in a manner not
only creditable to themselves but
sustaining the high reputation so
justly earned by the lovely direc-
tress
In the presentation of a piece of
exquisite cut glass the pupils evi
denced their love affection and ap-
preciation for their teacher ThiB
was a great surprise to Miss Ethel
The presentation speech was made
by one of the smallest of the class
in a child like tone and pronounct
asion she handed the box contain-
ing the glass to her teaiher saying
dis is from the clas that of it
Belf Bpoke volumes In accepting
the bright token of love Miss Ethel
only said a few words assuring the
doners of her love and apprecia-
tion and invoking GodB blessing
on each one
Hearty and earnest congratula-
tions are extended Miss Ethel for
the great and merited success she
has attained in imparting to each
pupil a thorough knowledge of
music Her gentle and loveable
disposition is caught up by each
It is from her that each pupil
catches the inspiration that there
is a happiness in the understand-
ing of music of a higher order than
a mere harmony of sound It is
this higher inspiration which she
teaches not by note but by a model
disposition and suavity of manners
which each of her pupils should
emulate so that they can fulfill
the mission of life that of elevat-
ing and bettering their fdllowman
