Blessed is the candidate who re-
alized that a smile or a band shake
did not always mean a vote Noih
ing teaches a man the uncertainty
of the future so forcibly as to be a
candidate Disappointments which
usually follow eacb election is not
absolutely attributable to the fick
elness of the voter put more often
to the over sanguine disposition of
the candidate and the over eeti
mate of bis own population You
know everybody does not think
alike nor place the same estimate
upon each fellow man Tbe prop-
er feeling should be to be thankful
that you were voted for at all and
appreciate the one vote as much as
if elected

THE FABMER
Just why any young man would
leave a farm and go the towns is
something a thinking man cannot
understand Why they should
quit the farm and go to any kind
of public work is surprising Per-
haps one in a thousand make a
success after leaving the farm but
the large majoritycontinue to work
at so much per day payable week-
ly or by the month and when pay-
day comes as a general thing few
if any have any thing left over af-
ter tbe last pay day This contin-
ues from year to year each year
leBsenB his capacity to earn When
old age comes on tbe chances are
they have nothing and have to de-
pend on charity for support Not
so withthe prudent and energetic
farmer each year he should add
to his fortune by accumulating
stock and adding to his laud hold-
ings or enriching bis farm so as to
make two blades of grass grow
wher only one grew before Exer
ciBing thought discretion energx
and thrift the farmer is almost
sure to accumulate There is no
life as free from the worries caret
and anno3ances as the independ
ant farmer The farmer who has
his smokehouse well Oiled with
home made meat his crib full of
corn his hay loft full of hay his
pantry full of home canned goods
his barnyard full of chickens tur-
keys and geese plenty of milk and
butter such a farmer is more in-
dependent than the richest man in
the world His sleep is not dis-
turbed by the fluctuations of stocks
and tbe mishaps thatare constant-
ly hitting the financial world The
farmers sleep is sound and refresh-
ing no danger of nervous prostra-
tion he does not have to consult
the morning papers or wait for tbe
opening of the stock exchange to
ascertainwhat he has lost or won
The farmer walks out sees that
everything is in place there is no
worry in this There ib no doubt
but that the life of the well to do
farmer is by great odds the most
independent and happy life any
American citizen can adopt It is
so Btrange that a farmer boy will
leave tbe happiness and comfort
of tbe farm life for tbe uncertain-
ties and vicisitudes of tbe town life
and public works leaving happi-
ness and comfort for unhappiness
and discomfort Every days judi-
cious work on the farm adds that
much to the value of the farrn
With energy and study every farm-
er can make a success then why
leave tbe farm
TnelosB of Hfe in the paBt few
weeks has been appalling and the
financial loss has gone up into the
millions It requires a country
with great recuperative powers to
withstand the many bard licks the
country has been having the past
year But it continues to go for-
ward the people seem to let yes-
terday take care of itself and look-
out for today and tomorrow In
this way they are trying to repair
the broken places it is this in-
domitable spirit that has made tbe
United States what it is today and
will ever keep it pushing to tbe
