Early voting for the 2012 Primary Elec-
tion began Monday and will continue through
May 25. At stake, in addition to the presiden-
tial primary, are a number of other races to
determine each
party’s candidates
in the November
general election.
These include
U.S. Senate, U.S.
Representatives,
two seats on the
Texas Railroad
Commission,
justices on the
state’s two highest
courts, all 31 State
Senators, all 150
State Representa-
tives and a num-
ber of local district
and county elected
offices.
Several local races will be decided in the
party primaries. Both Precinct 1 and Pre-
cinct 3 County Commissioners face re-elec-
tion challenges in the Republican Primary.
Barring the emergence of a write-in candi-
date in the general election this fall, these of-
fices will be filled by primary voters.
Precinct 1 Commissioner Joe Schaef will
face off against challenger Coleman Bartlett
in his bid for a fifth term in office. Precinct 3
Commissioner Mark Meek has attracted two
challengers to his bid for a second term—
Bryan King and Don Burch.
Hemphill County Sheriff Morse Bur-
roughs is running for his first full term of of-
fice in the GOP primary. He was appointed
to that position by County Commissioners
in June following Sheriff Gary Henderson’s
unexpected resignation early in his second
term. Burroughs is challenged in his bid for
election by Deputy Ronnie Moore.
Another race that will be settled this
month is the one for 31st District Attorney—
an office now held by Lynn Switzer, who opt-
ed not to seek re-election this year. Instead,
Assistant District Attorney Jason Ferguson
and former Assistant DA Franklin Mc-
Donough, both of Pampa, are vying to take
over that office.
Also up for grabs this primary season—
and of particular interest to Hemphill Coun-
ty voters—is the House District 88 office
of Warren Chisum (R-Pampa), who is run-
ning for one of two open seats on the Texas
Railroad Commission. Canadian ISD school
board president Ken King is one of four can-
didates vying to be this district’s next State
Representative. Also in the running are Dis-
trict 87 State Representative Jim Landtroop,

ative Gary Walker and Mac Smith of Pampa.
In Hemphill County, early voting is being
conducted on the second floor of the court-
house in the office of county/district clerk
Lisa Johnson during regular business hours.
By mid-afternoon on Wednesday, 52 early
ballots had already been cast by primary vot-
ers. In the last primary elections involving a
presidential race in 2 010, early voting totalled
9 ballots in the Democratic Primary and 206
in the Republican Primary.

Those who will be away from home on
Election Day and during early voting, or who
are unable to get to the polls, may request
a ballot by mail. Tuesday, May 22 is the last
day a request for a ballot by mail must be re-
ceived.
In a recent call to Texans to participate
in the upcoming primary elections, State
Senator Kel Seliger, reminded voters to be
sure they have the necessary identification
required by law before heading to the polling
place.
“As you may recall,” Sen. Seliger noted,
“the 82nd Legislature enacted Senate Bill
14, which requires voters to present a state-
issued photo ID before casting a ballot, but
the U.S. Department of Justice refused to
approve the application of this law. A lawsuit
filed by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
to have the law implemented immediately is
currently pending in federal court.”
Acceptable forms of identification include:
• A driver’s license or personal identifica-
tion card issued by the Texas Department of
Public Safety, or a similar document issued
by an agency of another state, even if the li-
cense or card has expired;
• A form of identification that contains
your photograph and establishes your iden-
tity;
• A birth certificate or other document
confirming birth that is admissible in a court
of law and establishes the person’s identity;
• United States citizenship papers;
• United States passport;
• Official mail addressed to you by a gov-
ernmental entity; or
• A copy of a current utility bill, bank
statement, government check, paycheck, or
other government document that shows your
name and address.
