rpiie ('mirier is a neat little
tsar column paper that is excep-
tionally well printed and well
patronized hy the progressive
business men of Liberty, and, we
lenru that the reason of the good
appearance is because its sole
owner and editor is mine otlici
than Henry Richards.
Mr. Richards established the
Croshv Courier after leaving
Corrigan some two years ago and
we assume, since receiving issues
of the daily, that liis held at
Crosby was two small and In-
moved into the eapitol of Liberty
county.
Mighty glad to see evidence of
this former Corrigan citizens en-
joying prosperity and our good
wishes go with him.
The Plain Dealer censured the
Polk Comity Enterprise two
rears ago for being 'hard boiled
with the candidates. The Kilter-
prise has an iron clad rule that
all announcement fees and print-
ing for candidates must be cash
on-the-barrelhead.
During this campaign we will
not censure censure our contem-
porary so much. Two years ago
we allowed several candidates to
delay payment of their announce-
ment fees a few days as a snecial
favor. Unfortunately, for us, a
majority of those we favored
were defeated.
So. therefore, unless a candid-
ate can convince us beyond all
shadow of doubt that he is going
to be elected, we are inclined to
feel that maybe he better run his
campaign on a cash basis.
And, in this connection, it is
not the desire of any newspaper
to take unfair advantage of
man just because he is in politics.
The newspaper, generally speak
ing, really wants to be friends
with everyone. The newspaper
has a commodity to sell —adver
tising— just like the drug store
has drugs. It must sell adver
tising to exist and it must receive
remuneration from such sales. It
is regretable that all candidates
who run cannot win, but it is
not tlie fault: of the newspaper
that all do not win, but, when a
candidate gets on the books of a
newspaper and is then defeated,
it's a pretty safe hot that a good-
ly percentage of them will stay
until his name is charged oil.

Sheriff Holiday was up this
way Tuesday. lie took time to
tell us that lie would be a candid-
ate for re-election and would
send in his formal announce-
ment soon, but said lie was too
busy with liis duties to think of
polities now.
Mr. and Mrs. Robertns Will-
iams have been here thiN week
visiting relatives and friends. Be-
fore leaving Wednesday, they
drove by to have the Plain Deal-
er visit them in Baytown in the
future instead of McCamey. Mr.
Williams says West Texas is all
O. K. except it is too far from
folk county to suit lie and his
better-half.
I). A. Davidson—who we used
to know in Frio County ns just
‘Tick’ Davidson, was iu Corrigan
first of the week and we learn
(lint he has been transferred to
Polk county from Nan Jacinto,
and instructed to npo if he could
not run some of the tickH out of
this section. Mr. Davidson is a
‘good hombre’ if we ever met one
and we welcome him to Polk
county. He will probably have
some interesting articles in the
papers about his work in the
near future.
Tax Assessor Bill Brume and
Ed Thomas of Livingston, were
in Corrigan Wednesday. Mr.
Braine stated that lie had defi-
nitely decided to run for County
Clerk and would announce in
both papers shortly. He also says
for us to tell the tax payers that
it will not be necessary for them
to make a special trip to Living-
ston to assess their taxes in or-
der to get homestead exemption.
He says that lie will visit all
sections of the county before
May first, and assessments may
be made when lie makes liis run
around the county if it is more
convenient.
Prof. C. O. Chandler at Mos-
cow takes the cake this week for
handing us the disappointment
of the season. We have heard his
name mentioned repeatedly in
recent weeks as a probable can-
didate for County Superintend-
ent since lie was one of the men
who gave Prof. Peebles a close
run for the appointment, and.
last Sunday he handed in a
check for a dollar. While we
were trying to explain that the
announcement fee was $7.30 in-
stead of $1.00, lie explained that
the check was to pay for another
years subscription to.the Plain
Dealer for liis wife’s brother, Joe
Sellers, at San Benito. We tlmnk
you kindly. Prof., for the $1.00
and guess we will have to over-
look the disappointment this
time.
THE LIMIT
“So you think Ethel Is broad-
minded?'1
"I know It. Why, she Is broad-
minded enough to admit site's narrow
minded.”
The baptism and temptation of
Jesus should not be thought of as
part of liis preparation for his great
work, as is ropresenetd by many writ-
ers. They should rather tie viewed ns
the formal entrance of the Messiah,
the king upon his mission. In the
baptism we have the act of dedication
of himself to his work which made full
a righteousness, and In the temptation
we hare a record of his first official
conflict with the devil whose works
he came to destroy.
I. The Baptism of Jesus, the King
(3:13-17).
1. Ills coming to John (v. 13).
While the forerunner was discharging
his oltiee, the king emerged from his
seclusion at Nazareth and demanded
baptism at John's hands.
2. John's hesitancy (v. 14). The
Incongruity of this demand with the
purpose of baptism brought from John
a protest, but upon Jesus' satisfactory
explanation John baptized him.
3. The significance of his baptism
(v. 15). Its significance is found in
harmony with the central purpose of
his coming into the world, which was
to secure for his people salvation
through death and resurrection. This
act was tlie ollicial entrance upon his
work. It was an act of consecration
on liis part to the work of saving his
people through sacrifice. Christ was
baptized not because he hiyi sinned,
hut because he took the place of sin-
ners to be a substitute for them.
4. Approval from the opened
henvens (vv. 10, 17). Immediately fol-
lowing his consecration to his work
the heavens were opened and the
Spirit came and abode upon him, fol-
lowed by words of approval from the
Father.
II. The Temptation of Jesus, the
King (4:1-11).
This temptation was the opening
battle of the dreadful conflict between
Christ and Satan. In this struggle
note:
1. The combatants (v. 1).
a. Jesus Christ—He went immedi-
ately from the place of anointing and
heavenly recognition as the Son of God,
to meet the arch enemy of the race.
b. The devil—The one with whom
Christ struggled here was a real, per-
sonal being, tilled with cunning and
malice, and possessing great power.
2. The battleground (v. 1). It was
the wilderness of Judea. Tlie first
man was tempted in a garden with the
most pleasant surroundings, and failed.
The last man was tempted In a bare
wilderness, and gloriously triumphed.
3. Tlie method Of attack (vv. 3-9).
Since, as the Redeemer, Christ sus-
tains to mankind a three-fold relation-
ship—Son of man, Son of Cod, and
Mcssiali—each relationship was made
a ground of attack.
a. As the Son of Man (vv. 3, 4).—
Tlie appeal was made to the instinct
of hunger. Having been forty days
and nights without food as a normal
man, Jesus had a craving appetite.
IVlille the appetite was not sinful, to
have satisfied it in a wrong way would
hnve been sin.
b. As the Son of God (vv. 5-7).—It
was to test whether this personality
which had taken upon Itself humanity,
was divine. The devil quoted from a
messianic I’salm to induce Jesus to
presume upon God's care. God really
does care for his own, but to neglect
common precaution, to do the uncalled
for tiling Just to put God’s promise to
a test, is to sin nnd to fall.
c. As tlie Messiah (vv. 8, 9),—
Christ's mission as the Messiah was
to recover this world from the devil.
Tlie devil offered to surrender to him
on the simple condition that Jesus bow
to the devil, thus obviating the neces-
sity of tlie cross with its shame and
suffering.
4. The defense (vv. 4, 7, 10). The
lnstrunieut of defense ivns the word
of God. Christ met the enemy each
time nnd repulsed him with "It Is
written." Each time he quoted from
Deuteronomy, tlie book which higher
critics would discredit.
5. The issue (v. 11). The enemy
was completely routed. The strong
man was bound, making the spoiling
of Ids house possible.
Pearl of Prica
Hnpplness is that pearl of price
which all adventure for, though few
flud It. It Is not gold or silver that
the earthlings of this world seek after,
but some satisfying good which they
think Is there treasured up.
Making a Friend
Force is of no use to make or pre-
serve n friend, who Is an animal never
caught except by kindness and pleas-
ure. Obllgo with all your soul that
friend who lias made you a present
of Ids own.—Socrates.

Sinclair PENNSYLVANIA is freed from
petroleum jelly at as low as 60° F.
below zero!
No matter how fine a Pennsylvania grade oil Is, it can’t do its
best work if it contains petroleum jelly. Sinclair Pennsylvania
Motor Oil is refined 100% from the costliest Pennsylvania grade
crude—the famous Bradford-Allcgany crude which has mel-
lowed and filtered in the Pennsylvania field a hundred million
years. In addition, Sinclair removes the petroleum jelly from
Sinclair Pennsylvania by chilling it down to as low as 60° F.
below zero. Being jelly-free, Sinclair Pennsylvania does not
thicken unduly in cold nor thin out in heat. Try it. A single
crankcaseful will prove that Sinclair Pennsylvania stands up
better and lasts longer than any oil you ever used before.
