one o'clock thla morning by Abe 8o-
kolskl. who was asleep la his apart-
ments over tbe Sokolski store, be be-
ing awakened by tbe dense smoke
which prevailed for folly twenty min-
utes before tbe flames broke out.
At the time of scenting the smoke,
Mr. Sokolski did not know Just where
the fire was, but turned In the alarm
from his home, stating the Hewson
building was In flamea.
With the taming in of tbe alarm
to central, the Bremen were notified 1
by phone, bat the alarm at the water-
works plant was not sounded until
after the arrival of the fire wagon, the 1
whistle being blown by one of tbe Are- 1
men. tbe engineer at the plant claim-
ing not to hrve received any alarm i
and to know nothing of the Are.
