■ Family hosting
barbecue benefit
The family of CJ Sowell is
hosting a benefit barbecue plate
sale on Sunday from 2 pin. until 4
pin. in Cove City Park, in the
Rotary Pavilion.
CJ, better known as “Mr. CJ”
to children of all ages, operated a
home daycare for nearly 17 years
until he closed his business in Jan-
uary 2013 and went to work for
H-E-B Plus! in the Flaming Bird
Cafe.
CJ also has played Santa
Claus throughout the city for
more than seven years, more
recently working as a part-time
professional Santa, but additional-
ly has donated time to local organ-
izations such as the SMILE group
for special needs children, a local
Cub Scout pack and the Kempner
Volunteer Fire Department.
In September, CJ was diag-
nosed with a large cancerous
desmoid tumor on his back and
had surgery on Oct. 1. He has
been off-work for three weeks and
faces another surgery in Novem-
ber.
Plates can be picked up to-go
for $8 and include barbecued
sausage from Kreuz barbecue in
Lockhart, as well as sides and
dessert. Proceeds will go to help
with medical expenses not cov-
ered by insurance.

Trailer, pressure washer stolen on Wednesday

The Copperas Cove Police
Department answered a call on
Wednesday at 2:37 p.m. in the
1400 block of Mashbum Road
where a trailer, a pressure wash-
er and miscellaneous parts alto-
gether worth $14,019.19 were
stolen.
The Copperas Cove Police
Department responded to a call
pertaining to continuous vio-
lence against family reported
from a location in the 600 block
of Yarborough Court on Monday
at 10:07 a.m.
Noel Castro II was arrested
at the police department on
Monday at 6:01 a.m. for theft
that happened on Oct. 8 when a
bicycle worth $120 was stolen
from the Copperas Cove
High School area.
Donavan Derell
Harris was arrested in
the 600 block of East
Highway 190 on Mon-
day for assault by con-
tact and failure to attend
school capias.
An incident of injury
to a child was reported to
the police department at 12:22
p.m. on Monday.
Susan Edsell-McBride was
arrested at the police department
on Monday at 1:44 p.m. for
aggravated assault with a deadly
weapon in connection with an
incident that happened on Oct. 8
when a terroristic threat was
reported from the 2500 block of
Live Oak Drive.
Interference with child cus-
tody along with welfare
concern was reported at
3:19 p.m. on Monday
from the 200 block of
Appaloosa Drive.
Prisciliano
Valdez was arrested
in the 2600 block of
East Highway 190 on
Monday at 11:52 p.m.
for a second offense of
driving while intoxicated. He
was also arrested for unlawful
carrying of a weapon.
The Copperas Cove Police
Department answered three calls
pertaining to the theft of money
on Tuesday. The first incident
was reported at 9:23 a.m. from
the 400 block of East Highway
190 where nothing was damaged
but a safe and money were
stolen. The total monetary value
assessed in this incident was
$2,623. The next one was report-
ed at 11:52 a.m. from the 900
block of Dryden Avenue where
money in the amount of $40 was
stolen. The third theft of money
was reported from the 200 block
of West Highway 190 where
money in the amount of $1,020
was stolen.
Thomas Wayne White was
arrested in the 1100 block of
Cummings Avenue on Tuesday
at 4:52 p.m. for a city ordinance
violation in the form of soliciting
without a permit. He was issued
a citation.
The Copperas Cove Police
Department arrested Francisco
Emanuel Villareal at the inter-
section of Dennis Street and FM
3046 on Wednesday at 11:54
a.m. for criminal mischief over
$50 under $500 in connection
with an incident that happened
on Aug. 9.
Interference with child cus-
tody was reported to the police
department at 2:07 p.m.
A juvenile was detained at
the police department on
Wednesday at 6:19 p.m. for
evading arrest or detention, pos-
session of a penalty group two
controlled substance and posses-
sion of under two ounces of mar-
ijuana in connection with an
incident that happened on Oct. 3
in the 500 block of Myra Lou
Avenue when a hit and run acci-
dent was reported in which a
highway fixture or landscaping
received damages costing more
than $200 to repair and posses-
sion of marijuana. The juvenile
was later released to a parent.
