WHAT TUE MINERS BUY
Qnger Things Kept in the General
StorcB in the Coke Regions
New York Pun
Every merchant is guided more
or lnss in the purchase of his sup-
plies by the character of his custom-
ers but the men who run the gen-
eral stores in the coke regions of
Pennsylvania have more pecnliar
ideas to meet than is the lot of the
average storekeeper These stores
are all controlled by the owners of
the mines and it fs alleged lhat
fome of them force their men to
buy from them exclusively The
profits of these stores aro undoub
tedly large although the prices at
rotne of tiitm at least are lower
than they are at the iifUil country
stores The unique features of the
wares carried in these stores are
the enormous feather beds Polish
and Ilurgirian headdresses heavy
boots for the women as well a9 the
men and all sorts of gaudy shawls
and dnS3 stuff Among the special
provisions three stores supply are
highly seaEoned sausages and hams
riich as are found in the Hnncarian
and Polish quarters of this town
The Poles tire mnch more extrava-
gant than the Hunds ami buy much
better nnJ higher priced goods
The Huns bny the cheapest kinds
or meat of which they moko their
golashes They do not bny very
much of anything in the way of
provisions however relying largely
upon their gardens for vegettblee
and ocarsionally killing one of their
ducks or gces < The Poles on the
contrary rily Very little hpon their
own efforts although they al6o
have good gardens but purchase
the bett foods that the stores have
Very few of the pUrehareerp pay
cash Instead they secure from
their foreman tickets for various
amounts These aro presented a
the stores in payment for supplier
and the cleiks mark on them tin
amounts of their purchasrs When
tho whole value or a ticket has
neen contracted for it is taken rip
by the cleik of the store
